Description
Music from all three films arranged for string instruments. Desirable and collectible, these instrumental folios are loaded with black-and-white photos of scenes from all three films. They are printed on top-quality antique paper stock, and the covers showcase the new "trilogy" artwork. The string series was written especially for violin, viola, and cello. Each book features a piano accompaniment and a carefully crafted removable string part complete with bowings, articulations, and keys well suited for the Level 2-3 player. A fully orchestrated accompaniment recording, with demo tracks (featuring live string performances) and play-along tracks, completes each package. The string books are completely compatible with each other and can be played together or as solos. Due to level considerations, the string books are not compatible with the books in the wind series. Titles are the twelve major themes from the blockbuster trilogy: from The Fellowship of the Ring: The Prophecy * In Dreams * Concerning Hobbits * Many Meetings * The Black Rider; from The Two Towers: Gollum's Song * Rohan * Evenstar * Forth Eorlingas; from The Return of the King: Into the West * The Steward of Gondor * Minas Tirith. This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

More about this title

About the Composer: Howard Shore

Howard Shore is a film composer whose work across fantasy epics has defined orchestral storytelling for a generation of musicians. His scores for The Lord of the Rings trilogy earned Academy Awards and Grammy Awards, establishing him as a master of thematic development and emotional breadth through instrumental writing.

Why we love this

These arrangements capture the sweeping character of Shore's original themes while keeping them accessible to younger string players. The carefully selected bowings and articulations guide violinists toward authentic phrasing without requiring advanced technique, making it possible to sound genuinely cinematic at Level 2-3.

What to expect

These pieces evoke the grandeur and intimacy of Middle-earth through melody. From the heroic urgency of "Forth Eorlingas" to the gentle longing of "Evenstar," each theme carries emotional weight and cinematic sweep that resonates even at a modest technical level.

Who it's for

Violinists in their second or third year of playing will find these arrangements both engaging and achievable. This book works well for students in school orchestras, small ensemble classes, or private lessons who want to explore film music with recognizable themes and rewarding accompaniment.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melody line with the piano accompaniment by listening to the demo tracks first; this helps you hear where your part sits in the full orchestration.
  • Pay close attention to articulation markings (staccato, legato, accents) as Shore uses them to shape character and emotion in each theme.
  • Use the play-along tracks to develop rhythmic confidence, especially in pieces with rhythmic figures that anchor the accompaniment.
  • Shape phrases by slightly extending held notes and allowing small breathing moments where the music naturally pauses, rather than playing at one dynamic level.

How to use it

Feature individual themes in winter concerts, pops concerts, or film music showcases. The twelve selections allow you to program a complete thematic suite, or pair standout pieces like "Concerning Hobbits" or "Into the West" with other repertoire to create programming variety. The compatible string parts (viola and cello available separately) make ensemble performance possible within a single orchestra.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and executing articulation markings (staccato, accent, legato) within flowing melodic lines
  • Interpreting dynamic shape and phrasing in film-derived music
  • Coordinating with piano accompaniment and tracking ensemble balance
  • Managing bow distribution across longer phrases at varied tempos
  • Building intonation awareness in romantic and dramatic contexts
