About the Author: Janet Gardner

Janet Gardner

Janet Gardner studied music education at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, and spent 33 years teaching elementary general music in Montevideo, Minnesota. Her work as an educator earned her recognition as the 1995 Minnesota Music Classroom Teacher of the Year, and she led workshops and clinics across state universities and music conventions throughout the United States and Canada.

Gardner has composed numerous musicals for young performers published by Alfred Music, including Bones!, Broadway Santa, The Phantom of the Music Room, and Star Search, alongside choral pieces such as Godfrey Gordon Gustavus Gore and The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls. Her compositions have received annual ASCAP awards. Since retiring from classroom teaching in 2006, she continues composing in Montevideo, where she remains active as a church musician and contemporary music director.

Why we love this

Gardner writes comedic scenes that land without condescending to young singers. The Awards Show concept gives every student a moment to shine, whether they're delivering punchlines as announcers or playing standout characters like the scheming Big Bad Wolf. The combination of six musical numbers and two commercials keeps the energy high while keeping rehearsal demands manageable for elementary and middle school choirs.

What to expect

Pure theatrical joy mixed with just enough mischief. The Awards Show framing lets students play both sincere and silly, celebrating beloved fairy tale characters one moment and cracking up at villain commercials the next. The Big Bad Wolf prowling through the action adds comic tension that propels the story forward without taking itself too seriously.

Who it's for

Elementary and middle school choirs looking for a full musical production that balances comedy with genuine musical moments. This works for schools wanting ensemble work that doesn't require complex pit orchestration or extensive technical support, and for directors who need a show that keeps younger singers engaged across multiple rehearsals without losing focus.

How to get the most out of it

  • Make the Big Bad Wolf's attempted heist the emotional anchor of the show. Even if he's comic relief, his motivation to steal the award should feel genuinely urgent during his scenes.
  • Use the commercial breaks as opportunities to reset staging and let energy drop intentionally, making the musical numbers feel fresh when they return.
  • Cast singers who can handle both the charm of fairy tale characters and the humor of Awards Show parody; versatility matters more than power at this level.
  • If using the recorded accompaniment, do at least one run-through without it so students develop independence and don't become dependent on the backing track for tempo and confidence.

How to use it

Program this as a spring concert centerpiece where the full choir can take ownership of the narrative. The modular structure of six numbers plus commercials means you can also extract individual songs for winter concerts or talent showcases if your full schedule changes. The Grade 3 and up level makes it flexible for mixed-age elementary choirs or as a accessible entry point for younger middle school singers.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing in character with clear diction during comedic and dramatic moments
  • Responding to stage directions while maintaining vocal control and ensemble balance
  • Connecting with audience through direct address in commercial segments
  • Building ensemble awareness across extended musical numbers with mixed voice parts
  • Sustaining focus during a full narrative arc with multiple scene changes and character interactions
