About the Composer: Martha Mier

Martha Mier

Martha Mier has shaped elementary piano education for decades through her prolific output of accessible, engaging repertoire. A graduate of Florida State University and a certified piano teacher through the Music Teachers National Association, the Florida State Music Teachers Association, and the National Guild of Piano Teachers, she brings both classroom experience and professional credentials to her compositions. Her work with Alfred Music Publishing since 1989 includes the widely taught Jazz, Rags & Blues series and Romantic Impressions collections, alongside more than 200 other educational publications.

Mier's teaching background runs deep. She maintained a private piano studio in Lake City, Florida for many years and has contributed significantly to church music and professional accompanying. Her visibility in the pedagogy world extends internationally; she has led clinics and presented at the Music Teachers National Association Conference, the World Piano Pedagogy Conference, state conventions across the United States, and workshops in Australia and New Zealand. Many of her solos have earned recognition through the National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festival Bulletin.

Why we love this

Mier writes with an intuitive sense of what elementary pianists can absorb and enjoy at first glance. The Donkey's Serenade balances charming melodic content with genuinely singable lines, making it the kind of piece students want to play again once they've learned it through once. It's the rare elementary piece that survives repetition because the music itself has personality.

What to expect

Whimsical and warm. The piece has a gentle character study quality, as though you're watching a donkey present itself with unexpected dignity. The melodies suggest personality without sentiment, landing somewhere between playful and earnest.

Who it's for

Elementary pianists (typically grades 2-4) who have moved beyond beginner method book material and can handle four pages of continuous solo repertoire. It suits students building confidence in reading, phrasing, and musical interpretation without the technical demands of intermediate literature.

How to get the most out of it

  • Find the humor in the character. This isn't a serious serenade; let the donkey's personality show through in your phrasing and touch.
  • Keep the melody singing even in the simpler passages. Avoid playing mechanically when the harmonic movement is straightforward.
  • Pay attention to dynamic markings as clues to musical shape. They're written by someone who understands what makes a phrase breathe.

How to use it

Program it in a student recital for a moment of levity and character. It works equally well as a memorized solo showcasing musicality at an elementary festival or as a reward piece for a student who has just completed a method book level. The four pages make it substantial enough to feel like an achievement without overloading a young performer.

Skills your students will build

  • Phrase shaping across four-measure units
  • Reading and executing basic dynamic markings
  • Sustaining focus through multi-page repertoire
  • Playing with character and intentionality rather than mechanical accuracy
