More about this title

About the Composer: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck directs choral publications at Alfred Music and has composed and arranged over 450 choral works performed by singers across the globe. His output spans vocal resources, children's musicals, and sight-singing curricula including Sing at First Sight, Foundations in Choral Sight Singing, and Vocalize! 45 Vocal Warm-Ups That Teach Technique. He holds degrees in Music Education from Ithaca College and Northwest Missouri State University.

Beyond the page, Beck works as a guest conductor, choreographer, and clinician for school and honor choirs throughout the United States and internationally. He has served as commissioned composer and conductor for all-state and regional ensembles and brings his background as a tenor and musical theatre director to his choral writing. Since 1992, he has also worked as a studio singer for Alfred Music, giving him direct insight into what singers need and want to perform.

Why we love this

Beck writes novelty numbers that actually work in rehearsal and performance. The Candy Cane Twist delivers the fun and movement you're looking for without sacrificing singability or clarity, and the included recorded accompaniment lets you rehearse with professional-quality support from day one.

What to expect

A playful twist on holiday tradition, with a groove that invites movement and a spirit that feels fresher than typical Christmas fare. The novelty hook sits comfortably between earnest and tongue-in-cheek, letting singers have genuine fun while staying musical.

Who it's for

Middle school and high school choirs looking for an engaging holiday number with choreography built into the arrangement. This works for groups of any size and singers at mixed ability levels, since Beck's vocal writing prioritizes accessibility without sacrificing fun.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the rhythmic precision of the accompaniment track to lock the groove; the twist rhythm works best when your singers stay planted on the beat.
  • Use the staging suggestions early in rehearsal so singers understand how movement and vocal lines connect; this prevents the choreography from becoming a distraction.
  • Keep the energy bright and conversational in the verses before opening up the full vocal texture in the chorus; this dynamic contrast gives the humor room to land.

How to use it

Open a winter concert with this piece to set a lighthearted mood and establish audience engagement early. It pairs well alongside more traditional holiday selections and gives younger or newer singers a memorable performance experience that builds confidence.

Skills your students will build

  • Rhythmic precision in syncopated grooves
  • Coordination of vocal line with choreographed movement
  • Part independence while maintaining a unified ensemble sound
  • Call-and-response phrasing and ensemble entrances
