Description
Written in the key of D major and entirely in first position, The Boogie-Man Blues can be used to introduce young string players to swing, "walking" bass and the 12-bar blues form. There are a few slurs and a hint of chromaticism to allow for focus on finger placement and intonation. For those interested in improvising, there is an optional repeated section for solos, with two sample solos included. You'll have your orchestra swingin' in no time! This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

About the Composer: Carrie Lane Gruselle

Carrie Lane Gruselle

Carrie Lane Gruselle earned her Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire and her Master of Music Education from the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point, where she specialized in Suzuki pedagogy. She brings classroom experience and deep knowledge of string pedagogy to her compositions, having taught elementary and middle school strings in the Appleton Area School District while also directing cello studies through the Lawrence University Arts Academy.

Gruselle's background in both traditional and Suzuki approaches shapes her writing for young string players. Her pieces prioritize clear pedagogical purpose alongside genuine musical enjoyment, making them valuable additions to repertoire at the early intermediate levels.

Why we love this

This score introduces swing style and the 12-bar blues with complete musical authenticity rather than oversimplification. The deliberate choice to keep everything in first position and D major removes technical barriers, letting your students focus on the groove, intonation, and the particular rhythmic feel that makes blues music swing. The included sample solos invite improvisation without requiring your students to build an entire solo from scratch.

What to expect

Relaxed groove meets rhythmic precision. The walking bass creates a gentle forward momentum while the melody floats above, landing on blue notes and syncopated figures that feel jazzy but accessible. There's a playfulness here—the optional solos invite students to find their own voice within the structure.

Who it's for

Grade 2 string orchestras ready to step beyond classical repertoire into American vernacular music. This works well for students who have basic bow control and can play in first position reliably but may not yet be ready for complex meters, key signatures, or quick shifts.

How to get the most out of it

  • Anchor the swing feel in your walking bass line. Have cellists and basses establish a confident, relaxed pulse before bringing in the upper voices; once that foundation locks in, the style clicks for everyone.
  • Listen for the independence between the rhythm section and melody. Encourage violins to sit slightly behind the beat in a bluesy style while the bass stays steady and supportive.
  • If students improvise over the repeated solo section, remind them that blues solos often use space and call-and-response rather than filling every beat. The sample solos model this restraint.

How to use it

Program this in a fall concert alongside other Americana or light classical fare to give your audience a refreshing change of pace. It also works beautifully as a teaching moment mid-rehearsal year when you want to introduce stylistic diversity without adding technical complexity to your students' plate.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and playing swing rhythm and articulation
  • Walking bass line construction and steady rhythmic foundation
  • 12-bar blues form and structure
  • Intonation and finger placement in first position with chromatic approaches
  • Stylistic listening and phrasing in blues idiom
  • Optional: basic improvisation over a fixed harmonic form
