About the Composer: Rossano Galante

Rossano Galante

Rossano Galante began his musical training as a trumpet player, earning his Bachelor of Arts in trumpet performance from SUNY Buffalo in 1992. That same year, he was selected as one of nineteen international students admitted to USC's prestigious Film Scoring Program, where he studied composition under Jerry Goldsmith, the Academy Award-winning orchestrator of The Omen.

Since relocating to California in 1999, Galante has become a sought-after orchestrator in the film industry, collaborating with Oscar-nominated composers Marco Beltrami, Christophe Beck, and Brian Tyler on major studio productions including the Avengers, A Quiet Place, Fast X, and The Super Mario Brothers Movie. Beyond his film work, Galante maintains an active concert music practice, with over 68 published compositions for band and orchestra across multiple publishers including Alfred, Schirmer, and Curnow.

Why we love this

Galante brings his film orchestration expertise directly into this work, crafting a piece that feels cinematic and cohesive without sacrificing the dramatic possibilities of a concert setting. The combination of sweeping strings, assertive brass writing, and driving rhythmic momentum gives your orchestra genuine momentum and narrative arc to execute, making it equally rewarding for performers and audiences. This is repertoire that teaches your musicians how to sustain tension and build intensity over four minutes of focused musical storytelling.

What to expect

Terminus Approaching unfolds like the final act of a film score, building an inexorable sense of cosmic dread through lush harmonic movement and pulsing rhythmic energy. The piece grips listeners with its combination of lyrical string writing and assertive brass statements, creating an atmosphere where beauty and menace coexist. You emerge from the experience having inhabited a world defined by imminent change and unavoidable fate.

Who it's for

Advanced high school orchestras and collegiate ensembles ready to tackle sophisticated orchestration and sustained dramatic intensity. This work challenges musicians across all sections to balance intricate layering while maintaining the forward momentum of a larger narrative arc.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the relentless rhythmic ostinati in the accompaniment against the soaring melodic lines; these layers must coexist without either drowning the other out.
  • Shape the bold horn themes with clear articulation and consistent tone quality across the section to make them cut through the fuller orchestration.
  • Maintain steady tempo through the sweeping string passages to let the harmonic progressions breathe and accumulate their full dramatic weight.
  • Conduct with clarity and intentionality throughout; the programmatic tension depends on performers understanding the emotional architecture of the moment-to-moment pacing.

How to use it

Program this as a centerpiece for a concert built around contemporary orchestral cinema, pairing it with other programmatic works that allow your orchestra to demonstrate narrative sophistication. Its 4:15 duration and advanced difficulty make it ideal for a mid-to-closing slot that showcases ensemble maturity and technical accomplishment. Consider programming it at a festival or competition where the dramatic impact and polished orchestration will resonate with adjudicators and audiences.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining tension and dramatic arc across extended passages
  • Balancing multiple independent orchestral layers simultaneously
  • Coordinating complex brass and string writing with rhythmic precision
  • Executing sweeping harmonic progressions with tuning and blend
  • Reading and executing cinematic compositional techniques in concert settings
