More about this title

About the Composer: Dennis Alexander

Dennis Alexander

Dennis Alexander has shaped piano education for decades through his prolific output with Alfred Music Publishing, beginning in 1986. His more than 400 published works and recordings have made him one of the most performed composers of educational piano repertoire worldwide. He taught piano pedagogy at the University of Montana for 24 years, later moving to California where he held faculty positions at Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Northridge while maintaining an active private teaching studio.

Beyond the classroom, Alexander has established himself as a performing artist and clinician. He made his Carnegie Recital Hall debut in 1987 and has served as a collaborative pianist for recognized soloists and chamber ensembles. A former president of the Montana State Music Teachers Association, he remains a sought-after presenter at state and national conventions. His commissions and international touring have taken him across Asia and beyond, and he continues composing from his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Why we love this

Alexander writes music that respects the intermediate pianist's growing musicality without condescending to technical ability. This piece balances emotional substance with accessibility, making it ideal for students ready to explore expressive depth beyond early-level repertoire. The four-page length gives students a complete musical thought to develop without overwhelming rehearsal schedules.

What to expect

The music unfolds with quiet sophistication and affection. Alexander's harmonic choices create intimate moments without sentimentality, inviting pianists to discover how restraint and careful voice-leading can convey genuine feeling.

Who it's for

Intermediate pianists seeking repertoire that combines emotional expression with technical accessibility. This piece suits students who have developed basic technique and are ready to explore the relationship between harmony, phrasing, and musical storytelling.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the phrasing with a singing tone quality, imagining a vocalist rather than a pianist at the keyboard. This approach brings out the tenderness embedded in Alexander's harmonic language.
  • Pay attention to dynamics and pedal changes as structural markers. Alexander uses these tools deliberately to clarify emotional shifts and harmonic colors.
  • Balance the hand parts so that neither melody nor accompaniment dominates. The piece invites intimate conversation between both hands.
  • Allow rubato to emerge naturally from the harmonic progressions rather than imposing it mechanically. Tender music breathes.

How to use it

Include this on a recital focused on American piano miniatures or program it as a contrast piece between more virtuosic works. Its accessible intermediate level and compact form make it valuable for student recitals, studio showcases, or spring concert rotations.

Skills your students will build

  • Expressive shaping of melodic lines over accompaniment textures
  • Reading and responding to dynamic and pedal indications as interpretive guides
  • Balanced hand coordination in two-part writing
  • Harmonic listening and sensitivity to voice-leading
