Why we love this

Technic Today, Part 1 gives bass clarinet players the focused technical work they need without pulling them away from the method they're already reading. The book isolates scales, arpeggios, and interval work in bite-sized chunks that build facility without overwhelming young players. Because it aligns directly with Band Today, Part One, students see immediate application between their daily exercises and the pieces they're playing in ensemble.

What to expect

Methodical and purposeful. Each exercise has a clear reason for existing, building the fundamental patterns that underlie solid bass clarinet playing. It's the musical equivalent of scales for swimmers—unglamorous but essential work that makes everything else feel easier.

Who it's for

Bass clarinet students working through Band Today, Part One who need dedicated technical work beyond the method itself. Intermediate band directors looking to strengthen rhythmic accuracy, intonation, and dexterity in their lower woodwind section.

How to get the most out of it

  • Build long tones with intention before tackling the faster technical passages. A steady, supported tone foundation makes runs and interval jumps cleaner.
  • Work through each exercise at a comfortable tempo first, then gradually increase speed. Rushing technique exercises teaches sloppy habits rather than precision.
  • Use the provided exercise sequences to target any weak intervals or patterns that appear in your method book repertoire; this focused practice transfers directly to your ensemble reading.

How to use it

Assign one section per week as a daily warm-up routine for your bass clarinet players. Rotate through the exercises in sequence so that by the time students finish the book, they've reinforced every technical foundation they'll encounter in Band Today, Part One and beyond.

Skills your students will build

  • Major and minor scale passages at varied tempos
  • Interval recognition and intonation across the staff
  • Rhythmic precision in running passages
  • Articulation control and tongue flexibility
  • Bass clarinet range extension and register control
