More about this title

About the Composer: Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray has spent her career building choral programs in California public schools, serving as Director of Choirs at Rosemead High School since 2004. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and Composition from Biola University and a Master of Arts in Music Composition from UC Santa Barbara, along with her California Single Subject Music Credential. Her compositional output spans over 100 published choral works that reflect her dual expertise in instrumental and vocal writing.

Beyond the rehearsal hall and composition studio, Gray pursues a full life of travel, swimming, reading, and cycling with her husband. Her extensive experience as both a pianist and choir director informs her understanding of what works practically in educational settings while maintaining artistic integrity.

Why we love this

Gray's sacred choral writing balances accessibility with genuine musicianship, making this piece work equally well for concert performance and festival competition. Directors appreciate her texts and harmonic language because they engage singers without requiring extensive rehearsal time to sound polished.

What to expect

The music conveys reverence and clarity without becoming overly austere or academic. Gray's compositional voice emphasizes transparency of texture and text intelligibility, creating a spiritual atmosphere that feels earned rather than imposed.

Who it's for

This piece suits intermediate to advanced high school and college choirs preparing for concert or festival performance. Directors seeking accessible sacred repertoire that respects both ensemble capability and musical substance will find Gray's approach refreshing.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the SATB texture so that the harmonic framework remains clear; Gray's writing rewards attention to voice independence without sacrificing blend
  • Let the text drive phrasing decisions rather than imposing uniform breath points; this will keep the sacred character from becoming mechanical
  • Use the PianoTrax accompaniment to establish tempos and harmonic security in early rehearsals, then gradually reduce reliance on it as singers internalize their parts

How to use it

Program this as a centerpiece for a sacred or liturgical concert, or pair it with contrasting sacred works from different periods. Its moderate length and SATB accessibility make it ideal for mid-season festival competition entries.

Skills your students will build

  • SATB voice independence and blend in sacred repertoire
  • Awareness of text underlay and pronunciation in Latin or English sacred texts
  • Harmonic listening and tuning in contemporary choral writing
  • Concert deportment and sustained vocal control in slower tempos
