About the Arranger: Alan Billingsley

Alan Billingsley brings decades of experience across educational, commercial, and entertainment sectors. His arrangements and compositions appear in school choral programs, professional recordings, television productions, and theme park entertainment. He has served as music director for NBC's "Days of Our Lives" and collaborated extensively with The Walt Disney Company on attractions and educational clinics. Seven of his works have received Grammy consideration, and he recently completed original songs for the Broadway-style musical On Our Way.
Billingsley holds a degree in music and psychology from Indiana University and operates a fully digital recording studio in Los Angeles. His work spans all musical styles, making him a trusted voice in adapting contemporary popular music for educational ensembles.
Why we love this
Billingsley knows how to preserve the energy and infectious hooks of pop hits while keeping the voicing accessible for SSA ensembles. The 4.5-minute medley format lets you program current music without sacrificing artistic depth, and the recorded accompaniment option means you can build rehearsal flexibility into your schedule.
What to expect
Vibrant, fun, and immediately recognizable. The medley captures the infectious energy of chart-topping hooks while the choral arrangement adds polish and vocal sophistication. Singing it feels current and celebratory rather than derivative.
Who it's for
SSA choirs seeking contemporary, high-energy repertoire that resonates with students. This works well for groups ranging from middle school through community choirs that want pop music with legitimate arranging craft.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance the blend across all three parts during the transitions between songs; these junctures are where precision in rhythm and intonation makes the biggest impact.
- Bring out the top line distinctly when it carries the main melody, but keep the inner voices engaged and in tune rather than relegated to background support.
- Shape each song's character separately within the medley format. Even brief chart hits deserve a sense of arrival and release rather than treating them as interchangeable modules.
- If using the recorded accompaniment, rehearse to it regularly so singers internalize the groove and tempo without relying on the track during performance.
How to use it
Program this as a concert opener or closer when you want to energize an audience and showcase your singers' ability to handle contemporary idioms. It pairs well alongside show choir selections or as a palate cleanser between serious classical works.
Skills your students will build
- Singing in contemporary popular music idiom and style
- Maintaining rhythmic precision in syncopated passages
- Balancing three-part harmony while tracking the primary melodic line
- Transitioning smoothly between contrasting sections within a medley
- Singing with confidence and expression in a high-energy context
