She remains active as a church pianist, accompanist, and former church music director. A sought-after clinician and workshop presenter for piano teacher associations across North America, she continues to balance her composing with direct teaching and mentorship.

Why we love this

Sunset Serenade strikes that rare balance between musical substance and technical clarity. The chordal melody supported by flowing arpeggios gives intermediate pianists genuine voicing work to do without overwhelming them, and the nature-inspired character makes the harmonic learning feel purposeful rather than mechanical.

What to expect

Sunset Serenade unfolds with unhurried grace, painting a landscape through soft harmonic shifts and gentle arpeggios. The lyrical melody floats naturally across the accompaniment, creating warmth and reflective calm that feels both intimate and spacious.

Who it's for

Late intermediate pianists who have solid technique and are ready to think consciously about chord voicing and harmonic color. This piece works for students who can manage hand independence and appreciate the connection between structure and expressive sound.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the chordal melody by listening across all the notes that form each harmonic unit. Resist the urge to emphasize the top note alone; instead, voice the chord so the listener hears the vertical sonority.
  • Keep the arpeggiated accompaniment rhythmically consistent and unhurried. A steady, fluid left hand gives the right hand room to breathe and sing.
  • Pedal mindfully to reinforce harmonic changes without blurring chord transitions. Listen for the moment where a new harmony begins and adjust the pedal accordingly.

How to use it

Feature this as a standalone recital piece that showcases a student's growing musicality and harmonic awareness. Its nature-inspired character also pairs well on a mixed program featuring other impressionistic or descriptive works.

Skills your students will build

  • Voicing chords expressively in a melodic context
  • Maintaining textural independence between melody and accompaniment
  • Sustaining consistent rhythm and pattern in the left hand while shaping melody in the right
  • Pedal control and awareness of harmonic change
