About the Composer: Loreta Fin

Loreta Fin

Loreta Fin AM is an Australian string educator and composer with deep roots in orchestral performance. She studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and served as concertmaster of the Sydney Youth Orchestra before establishing herself as Principal Viola player with the Queensland Pops Orchestra, a role she held for over 25 years while performing alongside world-class artists. Since 1993, she has directed the strings program at Somerville House School in Brisbane, earning recognition as a mentor, adjudicator, and frequent presenter at both Australian and American string conferences.

With over 100 published compositions for string ensemble, Fin has shaped the landscape of accessible string repertoire through her work with Alfred Music. She led the Australian Strings Association as both State and National President, received the 2009 Queensland State Award for services to music education, and was honored with the National Award for Services to Music and String Teaching. Her influence extends internationally through guest conducting at honours ensembles and collaborative projects like the Miri Music Project in Malaysia, making her one of Australia's most respected voices in strings pedagogy.

Why we love this

Fin captures something genuinely fun about the end of term without sacrificing musicality. The swing rhythms and syncopation feel age-appropriate for junior players but never condescending, and the carefree energy actually motivates groups to lock in their ensemble precision. It's the rare piece that works equally well as your spring concert finale or a morale booster before exams.

What to expect

Warm, breezy, and unburdened. You can practically hear the anticipation of summer in the swung rhythms and syncopation, with a lightness that feels earned rather than forced. The piece has the confidence of a composer who knows exactly what junior players can handle musically and enjoys writing for them.

Who it's for

Junior string orchestras at the 1.5 grade level will find accessible but genuinely engaging material here. Directors programming year-end concerts or looking to reward younger players with music that sounds fun to play will connect immediately with Fin's sensibility.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the swing feel early in rehearsal by having the group listen to and feel the rhythm before playing; this rhythmic vocabulary often needs explicit modeling for younger students.
  • Balance the syncopated lines against your sustained harmonic voices so the forward motion doesn't collapse into rhythmic chaos.
  • Let the piece breathe in its carefree sections; junior orchestras sometimes rush when they're excited, so mark your tempo clearly and use gesture to anchor the ensemble.
  • The 2:45 duration means this reads perfectly in concert flow, so consider where it sits programmatically to maximize its uplifting impact.

How to use it

Program this as your spring or end-of-year finale to send students out on a high note. The 2:45 duration gives you flexibility in concert pacing, and its uplifting character pairs well alongside more substantial repertoire, allowing you to showcase ensemble joy without overwhelming a younger group's stamina.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and executing swing and syncopated rhythms
  • Balancing rhythmic independence with ensemble cohesion
  • Maintaining forward momentum in lighter, character-driven pieces
  • Understanding stylistic articulation and rhythmic feel in contemporary accessible writing
