About the Composer: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck serves as Director of Choral Publications at Alfred Music, where he has shaped the catalog into a resource of exceptional depth and pedagogical integrity. With more than 450 choral works, vocal resources, and children's musicals in print, he has established himself as a composer and arranger whose music reaches singers across the globe. His scholarly contributions include Sing at First Sight, Foundations in Choral Sight Singing, and Vocalize! 45 Vocal Warm-Ups That Teach Technique, each designed to strengthen both musicianship and technique.

Beyond his publishing role, Beck is recognized nationally as a guest conductor, choreographer, adjudicator, and clinician. He has been commissioned to conduct and compose for honor choirs throughout the Southeast and beyond. A tenor vocalist himself, he maintains active involvement in musical theatre direction and sings with the North Carolina Master Chorale Chamber Choir. Beck holds degrees in Music Education from Ithaca College and Northwest Missouri State University, grounding his work in a deep understanding of how singers learn and grow.

Why we love this

Andy Beck writes swing arrangements that swing; there's no manufactured energy here, just genuine rhythmic vitality and accessible voicing that students actually enjoy singing. A Christmas piece with personality and humor feels essential in a season of predictable repertoire, and this one lands perfectly for singers who want to sound contemporary without abandoning musicianship.

What to expect

Playful and energetic, with the smooth swing sensibility of a mid-century pop tune. It's joyful without being saccharine, and the rhythmic precision required of the singers gives them real musical work to do while keeping the mood light and accessible.

Who it's for

Intermediate to advanced choirs seeking a Christmas selection that offers rhythmic sophistication and fun in equal measure. This works beautifully for groups comfortable with swing style and looking for a piece that appeals to contemporary musical sensibilities.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the swing eighth-note feel early in rehearsal by having singers listen to the recorded accompaniment multiple times before singing. Let the rhythm section breathe; don't over-conduct the groove.
  • Highlight the text naturally without rushing the phrase. The humor of 'Sugar Cookie' works best when articulation and diction feel conversational rather than theatrical.
  • Balance blend with personality in the swing sections. Each voice part should sit in the mix comfortably while maintaining the lilting quality that makes this style shine.

How to use it

Program this as a contrast piece alongside more traditional Christmas repertoire, or use it to open a holiday concert with immediate warmth and engagement. The swing arrangement and contemporary humor make it an excellent bridge between classical and popular styles for audiences of all ages.

Skills your students will build

  • Swing eighth-note subdivision and feel
  • Rhythmic independence in syncopated passages
  • Articulation and diction at moderate tempos
  • Blend and balance in contemporary harmonic settings
