Description
String Festival Solos are economical collections of transcriptions by Samuel Applebaum. In two volumes for each instrument, the solos are in progressive order of difficulty. Each volume contains nine pieces -- all classic titles in the Applebaum teaching repertoire. Some of these have been hard to find. Volume I progresses from Level 1 to Level 2, Volume II progresses from Level 2 to Level 3. The solos are useful for teaching technique, dynamics, phrasing, and overall musicianship. String Festival Solos are excellent for recitals, auditions and performances for assemblies, concerts or festivals. Contains: Two Austrian Folk Tunes (Kohler) * Rigaudon (Lee) * First Sonatina (Drew) * Minuet (Pleyel) * March (Clarke) * Second Sonatina (Drew) * The Strange Man (Schumann) * Two Classical Pieces (Reinagle) * Adagio and Allegro (Galliard). A Federation Festivals 2020-2024 selection.

More about this title

About the Creator: Samuel Applebaum

Samuel Applebaum built his reputation on understanding what young string players need: repertoire that develops technique without overwhelming. His transcriptions are carefully chosen from the classical and folk traditions, scaled to challenge students at exactly the right moments in their development.

Applebaum's gift was recognizing that learning happens through music itself, not through exercises separate from it. These solos have become foundational in string pedagogy because they work as both teaching tools and real performance pieces.

Why we love this

You get nine carefully curated pieces that progress logically from early Level 2 through Level 3, eliminating the hunt for appropriate repertoire at these specific milestones. The mix of folk tunes, classical forms, and character pieces means there's something for every student's taste and technical focus, and the Federation Festivals selection confirms these work in actual performance contexts.

What to expect

These pieces span the emotional range from bright folk character to introspective classical temperament, with moments of genuine lyricism alongside technical clarity. The shorter sonatinas and character pieces capture that sweet spot where a young bassist feels genuinely musical rather than merely mechanical, building confidence through repertoire that sounds mature at a manageable technical level.

Who it's for

Double bass students solidifying their reading and intonation skills in early intermediate years, particularly those preparing for recitals, auditions, or festival performances. Teachers looking for accessible yet musically substantive solos that develop multiple aspects of playing at once rather than isolating single techniques.

How to get the most out of it

  • Pay attention to the dynamic markings in the original compositions; they often reveal the phrase structure better than the note patterns alone.
  • Approach the sonatinas as complete stories with clear sections rather than continuous passages, using articulation and bow weight to distinguish movements.
  • Let the folk tunes breathe with appropriate rubato in the middle sections; these pieces depend on a sense of vocal lyricism that strict metronomic playing undermines.
  • Use the progression within the volume itself as rehearsal strategy: return to earlier pieces periodically to refine the techniques they introduce before tackling later ones.

How to use it

Feature one or two contrasting solos from this volume in a school assembly or district recital to showcase developing ensemble members without overextending them. The variety makes it ideal for a mixed string program where bass students need pieces that can stand alone but also complement violin and cello offerings from the same series.

Skills your students will build

  • Consistent intonation in extended positions
  • Tone control across dynamic changes
  • Phrasing within classical forms (sonata, minuet, rondo)
  • Rhythmic precision in mixed meters and dance forms
  • Stylistic flexibility across folk and classical idioms
