Description
For the first time, Star Wars® A Musical Journey (Music from Episodes I-VI): Instrumental Solos includes selections from all six Star Wars® movies arranged for flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, horn in F, trombone, piano accompaniment, violin, viola and cello. The arrangements are completely compatible with each other and can be played together or as solos. Due to level considerations regarding keys and instrument ranges, the wind instrument arrangements are not compatible with the string instrument arrangements in this series. Each book contains a carefully edited part that is appropriate for the Level 2--3 player and a fully orchestrated accompaniment recording. Each song on the recording includes a demo track, which features a live instrumental performance, followed by the play-along track itself. Also included is 4-color art as well as black and white art from the movies.

More about this title

About the Composer: John Williams

John Williams stands as one of the most significant film composers in music history, with a career spanning more than five decades. His work on the Star Wars saga fundamentally shaped how audiences hear orchestral music in cinema, creating themes so memorable and structurally sound that they serve as teaching tools in music education worldwide.

Why we love this

These arrangements give young string players immediate access to some of the most iconic themes in contemporary music without sacrificing musical integrity. The Level 2-3 writing preserves Williams's harmonic sophistication and melodic clarity while remaining playable for students still developing their technique, making each piece feel like a real orchestral excerpt rather than a simplified version.

What to expect

From the heroic sweep of the Main Theme to the intergalactic mystery of Duel of the Fates, these arrangements capture the cinematic drama and emotional range of Williams's original compositions. Playing them feels like stepping into the soundscape of the films themselves, with each piece offering distinct character and musical color.

Who it's for

Viola students at the Level 2-3 stage who want to play recognizable, engaging repertoire alongside a full orchestrated accompaniment. This collection works equally well for solo recital contexts or for ensemble settings where multiple string players perform the different orchestral parts together.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melody against the accompaniment track by rehearsing first without the audio, then layering in the recording at reduced volume until you find the right blend.
  • Pay attention to articulation changes between sections; many of these themes shift from legato phrasing in lyrical passages to more detached playing during action sequences.
  • Use the demo tracks to internalize phrasing and character before focusing on technical execution; Williams's themes are built on clear storytelling, not just note accuracy.

How to use it

Feature individual selections as recital solos throughout the year, or program several pieces together as a thematic concert featuring different Star Wars scenes. The collection also works well as interdisciplinary programming alongside film screenings or as motivation for younger students exploring what accomplished viola playing can sound like.

Skills your students will build

  • Melodic phrasing in both lyrical and dramatic contexts
  • Playing with accompaniment recordings and ensemble coordination
  • Shifting between legato and articulated playing within single pieces
  • Reading and executing expressive markings at multiple dynamic levels
  • Sustaining focused intonation across extended phrases
