About the Composer: Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse holds degrees in Music Education and Music from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he received the Distinguished Alumni award. Early in his career, he spent eight years managing rights and licenses for a major educational music publisher and served on the Executive Board of the Music Publishers Association of America. As a composer, he has created more than 800 works for choirs across all levels, earning regular ASCAP Special Awards for his contributions to standard choral literature. His compositions are performed widely throughout English-speaking countries.

Beyond composing, Althouse has collaborated with his wife Sally K. Albrecht on children's musicals and co-authored influential choral resources including The Complete Choral Warm-up Book and Accent on Composers. He compiled and arranged numerous vocal solo collections and authored reproducible classroom materials for music teachers. His work I Hear America Singing, co-written with Albrecht, was performed by the San Francisco Girls and Boys Choirs at President Barack Obama's Inauguration in 2009. He has served on the board of the North Carolina Master Chorale and currently sits on the National Advisory Board of the Folk Art Society of America.

Why we love this

Althouse's gift for spiritual arranging shines here: the piece balances accessibility with genuine harmonic depth, making it rewarding for singers at intermediate levels without oversimplifying the text or music. The structural arc—energetic outer sections framing a contemplative middle—gives singers something substantive to perform and audiences something memorable to hear, which is exactly what Christmas programming needs.

What to expect

This piece radiates warmth and conviction. The a cappella texture places the voices front and center, asking singers to create sonority and atmosphere entirely through their own blend and expression. The spiritual tradition runs through the melodic lines and harmonic language, grounding the Christmas text in something timeless and emotionally direct.

Who it's for

Advanced middle school and high school treble choirs seeking a substantial a cappella Christmas selection that engages singers with genuine spiritual depth. Directors programming sacred repertoire who want something beyond typical holiday fare will find this fulfills that need while remaining accessible to singers still building their parts-singing fluency.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the dynamic contrasts decisively. Althouse's markings create natural dramatic momentum, so commit fully to the softer sections rather than edging into them cautiously.
  • Anchor the slower middle section with steady breath support and extended phrase lengths. The contrast will land more effectively if the texture doesn't lose focus.
  • Balance the four parts through careful voicing rehearsal. In a cappella writing, even small intonation shifts in upper or lower voices become audible, so isolate parts by voice section before full ensemble work.
  • Allow the text to shape phrasing and articulation rather than imposing a uniform style across sections. The spiritual tradition depends on expressiveness within the form.

How to use it

Pair this with instrumental arrangements of spirituals or other a cappella sacred works to build a cohesive Christmas or winter concert program. It works equally well as a concert feature or as part of a longer choral work, and its eight-page length fits naturally into programming that balances shorter and longer selections.

Skills your students will build

  • Blend and intonation in four-part a cappella writing
  • Dynamic control and contrast across sections
  • Sustained phrasing in slower tempos
  • Text expression within spiritual traditions
  • Independence in part singing
