About the Composer: Steve Hodges

Steve Hodges

Steve Hodges holds degrees from Western Oregon University (Bachelor of Science) and Central Washington University (Master of Music Education). He spent four decades directing bands, choirs, and small ensembles across public schools before retiring from full-time teaching.

Since 1986, Hodges has composed over 120 concert band works published by Alfred Music, along with choral arrangements for Staff Music and Shawnee Press. His music has traveled internationally, appearing at festivals, state conventions, and on television broadcasts for TBS and ESPN. He has received commissions from honor bands and schools throughout the United States and Canada. A member of ASCAP, Hodges now lives in The Dalles, Oregon, where he remains active in community music alongside his wife, Teddie, and watches his grandchildren perform his compositions in their own school bands.

Why we love this

Rock repertoire at Grade 1.5 is hard to find without sacrificing musicality or playability, and Hodges delivers both here. The infectious motives and solid bass foundation give every section something to hold onto, making this piece equally engaging for struggling players and stronger ones. Your band will feel the energy of a real rock groove while building confidence.

What to expect

Speed Trap captures the rush of highway driving: steady momentum, infectious energy, and a sense of playful urgency. The rock idiom speaks directly to young musicians, and the melodic hooks stick with you long after rehearsal.

Who it's for

This piece is ideal for Grade 1.5 bands seeking engaging, age-appropriate repertoire that doesn't talk down to students. Directors will appreciate the straightforward orchestration and reliable doubling that accommodates typical band instrumentation at the beginner level.

How to get the most out of it

  • Keep the bass line steady and locked in; it's the spine of the piece and drives the entire rock feel forward.
  • Balance the melodic material so it cuts through the rhythm section without overblowing the ensemble.
  • Attend to dynamic contrast in the motives; repetition works only when you shape each statement slightly differently.
  • Watch for clarity in the percussion; rock grooves live or die by the precision of the rhythm section's interaction.

How to use it

Program this as an opener or second piece on a concert where you want to establish energy early. It pairs well alongside more traditional Grade 1 selections, giving the audience a sense of your band's stylistic range and the students a confidence boost from playing something contemporary and fun.

Skills your students will build

  • Rock rhythm feel and groove orientation
  • Ensemble balance in a non-traditional idiom
  • Part independence in repeated motives
  • Bass line precision and foundational support
  • Dynamic shaping within repetitive material
