About the Composer: Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht has shaped American choral music for over thirty years, building a catalog of more than 600 published works while serving as Director of School Choral, Vocal, and Elementary Publications at Alfred Music. Her contributions to choral education have been recognized continuously by ASCAP since 1987, and she has conducted festival choirs at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center, establishing herself as both a prolific composer and respected clinician.

Educated at Rollins College (B.A., 1976) and the University of Miami (M.A. in Drama, M.M. in Accompanying), Albrecht brings theatrical sensibility and deep musicianship to her choral writing. She has served on music faculties at Oakland University, Jersey City State College, and Meredith College, and her work with choral movement has become a hallmark of her compositional voice. In 2021, she received the Distinguished Alumna Award from both her graduate and undergraduate institutions.

Why we love this

Albrecht crafts two-part choral writing that feels genuinely celebratory without sacrificing musical substance. The addition of trumpet gives directors an immediate way to brighten a concert and create visual interest while keeping the vocal writing accessible for younger or newer singers.

What to expect

The pairing of choir and trumpet evokes triumph and joy. The writing is straightforward and energetic, allowing singers to experience success while the trumpet's brightness lifts the overall sound into something that feels genuinely festive.

Who it's for

Two-part choirs of intermediate ability, middle school and early high school ensembles, and directors seeking repertoire that combines accessibility with celebratory impact. The piece works equally well for sacred concerts or seasonal programming.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the trumpet part so it punctuates rather than overwhelms the choir; the voices should remain the primary melodic focus.
  • Work the choral entrances cleanly with the accompaniment, especially after trumpet statements, to maintain rhythmic confidence.
  • Encourage the trumpet player to match the energy and articulation style of the choir for unified musical phrasing.

How to use it

Ideal as a concert opener or closer on a sacred music program, especially in spring or holiday seasons when celebratory repertoire strengthens programming flow. The trumpet partnership also makes this effective for multi-ensemble collaborations where instrumental and choral forces can combine.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing with confidence in two-part texture
  • Responding to instrumental cues and maintaining ensemble cohesion with non-vocal parts
  • Balancing vocal blend with a brighter, higher instrument
  • Interpretation of celebratory sacred text with appropriate musical character
