About the Authors
Bob Phillips, born in 1953, stands out as a composer, author, conductor, and music educator who has fundamentally shaped string education. Recognized for his expertise in large group instruction and his pioneering work with diverse musical styles for strings, Phillips has become one of the most prolific educational composers of his generation. His materials reach thousands of young string players annually.
His compositional output spans over 200 published works for orchestras and bands, earning him recognition as an award-winning ASCAP composer whose pieces are regularly performed at the prestigious Midwest Clinic. Phillips has authored more than 25 instructional book series, including all six levels of Sound Innovations and innovative eclectic style collections such as Fiddlers Philharmonic, Jazz Philharmonic, Rock Philharmonic, Mariachi Philharmonic, Latin Philharmonic, and Fiddle and Song. His instructional DVDs, String Clinics to Go, have found wide adoption among music teachers across the country.
During his 27 years in Saline, Michigan, Phillips developed a string program serving over 700 students that became a nationally recognized model for excellence in both classical and eclectic music. He founded the Saline Fiddlers Philharmonic ensemble, which under his direction achieved international prominence through annual performances exceeding 80 shows and appearances at the White House and Midwest Clinic. His conducting experience includes positions with the Oakland Youth Symphony, multiple state all-state orchestras, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, and a 12-year tenure as resident conductor and arranger for the Wintergrass Festival in Seattle.

As Director of Education for Jupiter Band Instruments, he reaches educators globally through his acclaimed weekly "Boonshaft's Blog" and has been sought as a speaker and conductor across all fifty states and internationally. The National Association for Music Education and Music For All recognized his pioneering contributions by awarding him the inaugural George M. Parks Award for Leadership in Music Education.

Dr. Boonshaft has received official proclamations from five state governors and recognition from former President Ronald Reagan. He has performed for former Presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton, as well as former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. His academic recognitions include membership in Pi Kappa Lambda and Alpha Chi honor societies, the University of Hartford's Regent's Award (twice) and Outstanding Music Educator Award, and three selections as a National Endowment for the Arts Artist in Residence.
