About the Composer: Erik Morales

Erik Morales was born in New York City in 1966 and has built a prolific compositional career spanning classical, jazz, and commercial idioms. With over 150 published works across wind, orchestral, jazz, and chamber settings, he has established himself as a composer who consistently balances artistic integrity with pedagogical accessibility. His works have been performed internationally and commissioned regularly by schools and organizations across the United States.
Morales studied composition at Florida International University and earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Louisiana, Lafayette in 1989. His professional journey began in 1985 when a high school band director commissioned him to arrange music for the marching program, launching a career in educational music publishing that gained worldwide distribution in 2002. As a trumpeter, Morales has also made significant contributions to the trumpet repertoire; his ensemble works have received recognition at national competitions, and his Concerto for Trumpet in C and Piano was premiered at the 2009 International Trumpet Guild conference. In 2016, he was inducted into the Louisiana Association for Jazz Education's Hall of Fame.
Why we love this
Morales has crafted a concert opener that demands immediate attention without exhausting your ensemble. The Grade 2 scoring allows younger and less experienced bands to sound polished and professional from the first downbeat, making this an excellent choice when you need to establish momentum early in a performance.
What to expect
Soaring captures buoyancy and forward momentum. Sweeping melodic arcs float above a vibrant harmonic landscape, creating an immediate sense of lift and energy that propels both the ensemble and the audience into the concert experience.
Who it's for
This work suits Grade 2 concert bands, including younger ensembles, community bands new to contemporary repertoire, and programs seeking an accessible yet sophisticated concert opener. It works equally well for groups preparing for festival adjudication or building confidence on early-season programs.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance the sweeping melodic lines so they sing clearly above the harmonic foundation. Mark phrase shapes in rehearsal and conduct them as single musical units rather than measure-by-measure.
- Blend the rhythm section carefully during the opening passages; clarity of pulse supports the ensemble's confidence and locks the whole band together.
- Reserve full ensemble energy for the climactic moments. Contrast dynamic levels throughout to build audience engagement and prevent monotony over the piece's duration.
How to use it
Program this as your opening statement when you want to establish excitement and confidence early in the concert. The piece's energetic character and manageable difficulty make it ideal for showcasing ensemble progress without depleting the band's stamina for more demanding repertoire later in the program.
Skills your students will build
- Phrasing and melodic shaping at Grade 2 level
- Ensemble balance and blend within a mixed harmonic texture
- Sustaining clean articulation during fast-moving passages
