About the Composer: Katie O'Hara LaBrie

Katie O'Hara LaBrie

Katie O'Hara LaBrie is a composer, conductor, clinician, and cellist based in Northern Virginia. She earned her Bachelor of Music in Music Education from St. Olaf College and her Masters of Music in Instrumental Conducting from George Mason University. Her compositions draw inspiration from family, nature, and the real needs of student musicians; she has been recognized with multiple J.W. Pepper Editor's Choice selections and was honored as one of Yamaha's "40 Under 40" in 2022. Beyond composing, she founded the Fairfax Chamber Players and co-created "the Big IDEA" practice method, reflecting her passion for purposeful musicianship.

Why we love this

This piece hits the sweet spot for early ensembles: musically cohesive, immediately joyful, and built on genuine pedagogical thinking. The B-flat major scale focus and limited range mean every student gets to succeed while still experiencing real musical phrases, and the jingle bell accompaniment adds textural interest without overwhelming younger players.

What to expect

Crisp winter air, the rush of sledding downhill, and the warmth of coming inside for hot chocolate. The melody bounces with childlike delight, bright and uncomplicated, while jingle bells shimmer overhead like snow caught in sunlight.

Who it's for

Grade 1.5 concert bands looking for accessible, crowd-pleasing holiday repertoire. The limited range and straightforward key make it ideal for ensembles with developing sight-readers, while the engaging melody and festive character keep the experience fun for both players and audiences.

How to get the most out of it

  • Bring out the melody in your first clarinet and flute parts; the accompaniment should sit comfortably behind it so the bright character reads clearly from the audience.
  • Keep the tempo buoyant but manageable. A snow day should feel celebratory, not rushed, so lock in a steady pulse and resist the urge to accelerate.
  • Balance the jingle bell parts carefully. They're what give this piece its holiday sparkle, but they shouldn't overshadow the main melodic line.

How to use it

Program this as a standalone opener or closer in your winter concert to set an upbeat tone. At 2 minutes 15 seconds, it pairs well with more substantial pieces and gives newer players a confident moment in the spotlight without requiring extensive rehearsal time.

Skills your students will build

  • Playing in B-flat major with secure intonation across the ensemble
  • Balancing melody and accompaniment textures
  • Maintaining steady tempo in a joyful, energetic context
  • Reading concert band instrumentation with confidence at Grade 1.5 level
