About the Composer: Alice Parker

Alice Parker

Alice Parker's compositional legacy rests on a singular conviction: that melody is the heart of vocal music. After studying at Smith College and Juilliard, where she forged a lifelong creative partnership with Robert Shaw, Parker devoted herself to expanding the choral repertoire with settings of American folksongs, hymns, and spirituals. Her catalog exceeds five hundred published works, spanning operas, cantatas, song cycles, and individual anthems that have become standards for choirs across the globe.

In 1985, Parker founded Melodious Accord, Inc., and shifted her focus toward deepening musicians' understanding of melodic style, choral improvisation, and the church music tradition. Her written works, including essays on song leading and congregational singing, shaped how choral directors approach their craft. Recognized as Distinguished Composer of the Year 2000 by the American Guild of Organists, Parker received the Robert Shaw Award from the American Choral Directors Association, six honorary doctorates, and honors from ASCAP and the National Endowment for the Arts. She served as Director Laureate of Chorus America and remained a Fellow of the Hymn Society of the United States and Canada.

Why we love this

Parker's gift for crafting accessible, singable lines without sacrificing musical substance makes this octavo a genuine pleasure to rehearse. The piece respects both the capabilities of volunteer singers and the musical intelligence of attentive listeners, a balance that defines her most successful works.

What to expect

Bright and approachable, this work unfolds with the directness of a well-told story. The harmonic language is warm without being sentimental, and the vocal writing sits naturally in each voice part, inviting singers to listen to one another while tending to their own line.

Who it's for

This piece serves choirs of mixed voices working at an intermediate level. It suits both community and church settings where musicality and clarity of melodic line matter equally.

How to get the most out of it

  • Honor the text by allowing the melody to lead the harmonic movement rather than subordinating it to chord changes. Parker's settings always prioritize what the voices sing.
  • Encourage sopranos and altos to maintain a light, buoyant quality in the upper register; the piece breathes best when these voices don't strain for power.
  • Shape phrases by the natural contours of the melody, not by bar lines. Look ahead to the next phrase ending and adjust your approach to how the line moves, not how the notation sits on the page.

How to use it

Position this as a strong centerpiece on a secular concert program, or pair it with Parker's other folksong arrangements for a set focused on Americana. Its moderate length and accessible character make it ideal for spring concerts or informal gatherings where engaging an audience matters as much as impressing them.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing sustained melodic lines with rhythmic independence from other voice parts
  • Balancing personal line integrity with harmonic blend
  • Responding to text expression without over-dramatizing
  • Understanding folksong-influenced harmonic language
