More about this title

About the Composer: Martha Mier

Martha Mier

Martha Mier has shaped music education across three decades through her work with Alfred Music Publishing, beginning in 1989. Her extensive catalog of piano solos spans all student levels and appeals to teachers seeking music that engages young musicians without sacrificing musicality. She brings a wealth of classroom experience, having maintained a private piano studio in Lake City, Florida, while contributing significantly to church music and accompaniment work.

Mier's influence extends far beyond publication. She holds national and state certification through the Music Teachers National Association, the Florida State Music Teachers Association, and the National Guild of Piano Teachers. Her presentations at the World Piano Pedagogy Conference, the National Piano Teachers Institute, and state conventions have shaped pedagogy across the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. A graduate of Florida State University and member of Sigma Alpha Iota, she has co-authored Alfred's Premier Piano Course alongside more than 200 other educational publications, many of which appear on the National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festival Bulletin.

Why we love this

Mier writes elementary piano solos that actually interest young students instead of feeling like exercises. Sir Cabot delivers character and musical storytelling in just four pages, giving emerging pianists a piece that sounds impressive and feels rewarding to learn.

What to expect

Sir Cabot carries an air of adventure and nobility befitting its title. The piece balances charm with melodic clarity, inviting the pianist to discover musical storytelling within an accessible range and technical scope.

Who it's for

Elementary-level piano students who are ready for pieces with genuine character and musical substance. This solo works beautifully for a student building confidence in their reading and interpretive abilities while exploring something that feels like a real composition rather than a study.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the melody with clear phrase direction rather than playing through mechanically. Even at this level, each phrase needs a gentle arc and breathing space.
  • Let the harmonic progression support your tempo choices. Listen to how the chords move, and use that momentum to avoid either rushing or dragging.
  • Approach dynamics and articulation as part of the character. If the piece has a knightly or storybook quality, your touch should match that atmosphere.

How to use it

Include this in a recital or festival program alongside other Mier solos to showcase a young pianist's expressive growth. It works equally well in a studio recital setting where parents appreciate hearing music that sounds polished and intentional despite its elementary designation.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading across both treble and bass clefs with coordination
  • Phrase shaping and musical direction within accessible harmonic structures
  • Dynamic control and articulation choices that serve musical character
  • Sustaining student engagement with melodically interesting elementary repertoire
