About the Arranger: Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht has shaped American choral music for decades as a composer, arranger, conductor, and clinician with a particular gift for writing pieces that move singers across the stage as well as the heart. Since 1987, she has received the ASCAP Special Music Award annually and maintains more than 600 published choral works alongside 75 larger musicals and songbooks. Her conducting experience spans the country's most prestigious venues, including honor choirs at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center.
For over 30 years, Albrecht directed school choral, vocal, and elementary publications at major educational publishers, including her most recent tenure at Alfred Music. She holds degrees from Rollins College (B.A. in Music and Theater, 1976) and the University of Miami (M.A. in Drama, 1977; M.M. in Accompanying, 1979), and has taught in the music departments at Oakland University, Jersey City State College, and Meredith College. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, she received the Distinguished Alumna Award from both the University of Miami Frost School of Music and Rollins College in 2021.
Why we love this
Albrecht has built an arrangement that feels both accessible and genuinely musical, with counterlines that give every section something interesting to sing without compromising the carol's familiar warmth. The layered texture allows you to strip it down for a smaller ensemble or add the optional flute and percussion for occasions that call for fuller color. Whether you need something that works as a processional or a concert feature, the clear harmonic writing and moderate difficulty mean your singers can focus on expression rather than decoding the page.
What to expect
Warm, processional, and gently contemplative. The melody sits familiar in your ear while the harmonies shimmer underneath with carefully crafted inner-voice movement that gives the arrangement depth without complexity. There's a sense of purposeful motion here; the piece moves you through a space as gracefully as it moves through the harmonic progressions.
Who it's for
Choral directors working with school or church ensembles who need a Christmas piece that sounds polished without demanding excessive rehearsal time. This arrangement is ideal for intermediate-level SATB choirs that have solid blend and basic four-part balance but may not yet be tackling dense contrapuntal writing.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance the optional flute and percussion thoughtfully; they should enhance rather than overshadow the voices. If adding instruments, a solo flute line works particularly well during a verse, then pull back to voices only for a final chorus to reset the focus.
- Shape the counterlines so they sit distinctly in the ear. The arrangement gains charm when the inner voices stay confident and present; avoid the instinct to pull them back simply because they're not the melody.
- Consider a gentle processional tempo that allows the text to breathe and the harmonic changes to land clearly. Rushing through dilutes the carol's reflective quality.
- Use the recorded accompaniment to establish your preferred tempo and ensemble sound, then adjust your own interpretation as needed. The recording serves as a reference point, not a ceiling for what your singers can achieve.
How to use it
Program this as a processional opener for a Christmas concert or service, allowing singers to enter during the performance and build vocal and emotional presence. It also works beautifully as a quieter moment mid-concert, offering contrast to livelier holiday selections. The moderate length and accessible difficulty make it a reliable choice for December performances when rehearsal time competes with winter concerts and holiday commitments.
Skills your students will build
- Sustaining blend across all four voice parts while maintaining individual line clarity
- Balancing optional instrumental parts with vocal lines
- Shaping longer phrases with gentle text emphasis and harmonic awareness
- Singing countermelodies that serve a supporting role without drowning the main tune
