About the Composer: Donald Moore

Donald Moore

Donald Moore earned his Bachelor of Music in organ performance and Master of Arts in Teaching from Kent State University. He has served as Organist-Choirmaster at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and brings decades of experience in both performance and music education to his prolific output.

With over 500 published works across sacred, secular, educational, and popular choral styles, Moore has established himself as a major voice in American choral music. His compositions appear regularly at state and national festivals, and he is a seventeen-time recipient of the ASCAP Composers Standard Award. The American Choral Directors Association recognized him among 400 elite composers of historical significance in American choral music.

Why we love this

Moore's gift for writing accessible yet sophisticated holiday repertoire shines here. The madrigal style gives this piece genuine musical substance, while the limited vocal range for the lower voices makes it genuinely performable by developing choirs without sacrificing artistry.

What to expect

Energetic and charming, this piece captures the spirit of a Renaissance madrigal transported to a Christmas context. The contrapuntal textures create movement and independence among the voices, while the terraced dynamics prevent the piece from becoming heavy or overly precious.

Who it's for

This piece works beautifully for mixed choirs at the developing stage, particularly those with changing voices or limited lower vocal range. It's ideal for schools and community choirs that want holiday material with real musical substance but straightforward vocal demands.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the terraced dynamics deliberately; let each dynamic level sit cleanly before moving to the next rather than sliding between them.
  • Balance the contrapuntal lines by having singers locate their melodic phrase and commit to it independently, rather than following the sopranos.
  • Maintain rhythmic precision in the madrigal-style rhythms through careful attention to the score's notation; the buoyancy depends on rhythmic clarity, not rushing.

How to use it

This works equally well as a caroling piece (the a cappella setting makes it portable and performance-ready anywhere) or as a spirited feature on your December concert. Its genuine musicality makes it a strong anchor for a holiday program without requiring instrumental support or elaborate staging.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing independent melodic lines within contrapuntal texture
  • Responding to and executing terraced dynamic shifts
  • Sustaining pitch and blend in a cappella singing
  • Interpreting madrigal-style rhythmic notation
