More about this title

About the Composer: Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht has shaped American choral music for over three decades, first as Director of School Choral, Vocal, and Elementary Publications at major educational publishers, and throughout her career as a prolific composer whose work appears in more than 600 published choral titles. She has been recognized annually by ASCAP for her Special Music Award since 1987 and earned the Distinguished Alumna Award from both the University of Miami Frost School of Music and Rollins College in 2021.

Albrecht's reputation rests equally on her expertise in choral movement and her conducting presence at regional and national festivals, including honor choirs at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center. Her training spans music, theater, and accompanying (M.M. from University of Miami), grounding her approach in both performance practice and dramatic storytelling. She served as Chair of the Board of Trustees for Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society and continues to contribute to music education through her arrangement and composition work alongside her husband, composer and arranger Jay Althouse.

Why we love this

Albrecht writes 2-part choral music that sounds far more sophisticated than its accessibility suggests. The combination of optional trumpet and snare drum parts gives you flexibility in how you score the piece for your specific ensemble, and the built-in movement and staging ideas mean you're not starting from scratch when it comes to staging decisions.

What to expect

Bright and energized, with the kind of straightforward melodic charm that sticks with singers and audiences alike. The optional instrumentation and movement elements create a sense of celebration and purpose that lifts the piece beyond a simple choral reading.

Who it's for

This piece suits choirs ranging from middle school through community ensemble level, particularly those comfortable with basic 2-part writing and open to incorporating movement into performance. Directors seeking sacred music that engages singers both vocally and dramatically will find strong material here.

How to get the most out of it

  • Experiment with the optional trumpet parts early in rehearsal to determine whether they enhance the piece for your ensemble's capabilities and your performance space acoustics.
  • Mark cues for snare drum entry clearly in your choral scores so singers can hear the rhythmic anchor without looking for the percussion player.
  • Invest rehearsal time in the movement and staging elements Albrecht has built into the score; they're integral to the piece's character, not afterthoughts.

How to use it

This works well as an opener or closing number for a sacred concert, where its accessible voicing and optional staging allow you to build visual interest without overshadowing larger ensemble works. It also fits naturally into festival programming, where its concert-ready format means minimal setup demands.

Skills your students will build

  • 2-part ensemble balance and blend
  • following movement cues while singing
  • singing with optional instrumental accompaniment
  • awareness of how staging enhances musical meaning in choral performance
