About the Arranger: Bob Phillips

Bob Phillips

Bob Phillips (b. 1953) has shaped string education through four decades of innovative teaching, conducting, and composing. A pedagogue with deep expertise in large ensemble methods and stylistic diversity, Phillips authored the influential Sound Innovations series and pioneered eclectic style publications including Fiddlers Philharmonic, Jazz Philharmonic, and Rock Philharmonic. His compositional output exceeds 200 works for orchestra and band, earning him recognition as an ASCAP award-winning composer whose pieces are regularly heard at the Midwest Clinic.

For 27 years, Phillips directed the string program in Saline, Michigan, building it into a national model with over 700 students performing across classical and contemporary styles. He founded the Saline Fiddlers Philharmonic, which performed internationally and at the White House, and served as resident conductor and arranger for Seattle's Wintergrass Festival for 12 years. Phillips has guest conducted honor orchestras at the state and all-state levels across the country and at festivals including Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp and Interlochen.

Why we love this

Phillips brings a conductor's ear to this arrangement, balancing accessibility with genuine musical substance. The rhythmic energy characteristic of Stamitz emerges clearly even at Grade 2.5, allowing young players to experience the vitality of Classical symphonic writing without being overwhelmed by technical demands. Programming this piece strengthens a concert's center while building student confidence in larger forms.

What to expect

The characteristic drive of Stamitz pulses through this arrangement with elegant clarity. Young players encounter the rhythmic sophistication of the Classical period without technical excess, making this both a rewarding achievement and a genuine introduction to symphonic thinking.

Who it's for

This conductor score serves directors building Grade 2.5 string orchestras, particularly those introducing students to Classical repertoire and symphonic forms. It works equally well for concert and festival settings where programs need accessible yet musically substantive centerpieces.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish a consistent tempo early in rehearsal; the rhythmic signature Stamitz is known for depends on clear, confident pulse.
  • Distribute dialogue between sections intentionally. Phillips's arrangement clarifies melodic exchanges, so highlight them through subtle dynamic shaping and careful balance.
  • Let younger players feel the structural arc across all three minutes. Mark phrase endings clearly so students understand where breath and recovery happen within each section.
  • Balance homophonic passages with textural interest. Even at this level, viola and cello lines carry important harmonic color; resist the urge to submerge them.

How to use it

Open a concert with this piece to establish a classical anchor while building audience engagement through recognizable Classical language. Alternatively, program it midway through a festival rotation where judges appreciate the care Phillips took in scaling Stamitz's orchestral ideas to growing ensembles without compromising compositional intent.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and maintaining pulse within the Classical period style
  • Playing rhythmic figures characteristic of Stamitz's compositional voice
  • Balancing between sections in homophonic textures
  • Understanding phrase structure and formal sectional divisions
  • Intonation within sustained harmonic progressions
  • Dynamic shaping to support melodic and harmonic clarity
