About the Arranger: Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse holds degrees in Music Education and Music from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus. His career spans both publishing and composition; he spent eight years managing rights and licenses for a major educational music publisher and served on the Executive Board of the Music Publishers Association of America.

With over 800 choral works in print, Althouse's music reaches choirs across the English-speaking world. A writer member of ASCAP and regular recipient of the ASCAP Special Award, he has co-created children's musicals with Sally K. Albrecht, edited acclaimed vocal solo collections, and authored widely-used classroom resources including The Complete Choral Warm-up Book and Accent on Composers. He serves on the National Advisory Board of the Folk Art Society of America and resides in North Carolina.

Why we love this

Althouse respects the tune's spiritual DNA while giving it room to breathe in a modern choral context. The arrangement sits comfortably for mixed voices without sacrificing musical interest, making it equally at home in a concert setting or a community celebration.

What to expect

Warm and reflective, with an underlying sense of motion that keeps the piece from settling into sentimentality. The arrangement honors the hymn-like quality of the melody while introducing contemporary harmonic color that feels fresh without demanding heavy technical lift.

Who it's for

School and church choirs seeking repertoire that connects with audiences immediately. This octavo works equally well for developing singers who benefit from a recognizable tune and experienced ensembles looking for an elegant addition to secular programming.

How to get the most out of it

  • Let the text shape the phrase contours rather than treating each line as rhythmically identical; the folk roots respond well to natural speech inflection.
  • Balance the inner voices so they support the melody without eclipsing it; this tune's power lies in its singability for all four parts.
  • Pair the PianoTrax accompaniment with a rehearsal that emphasizes the choral blend before introducing the recorded tracks.

How to use it

Place this toward the end of a concert as a accessible closer that invites audience connection, or use it as an anchor piece in a program exploring American musical traditions. The 12-page format makes it manageable for groups preparing multiple pieces simultaneously.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing sustained phrases with consistent tone across all four parts
  • Recognizing and executing folk melody characteristics in a contemporary harmonic setting
  • Balancing inner voice independence with ensemble cohesion
  • Interpreting text-driven phrasing in a choral arrangement
