About the Composer: Anne Shannon Demarest

Anne Shannon Demarest

Anne Shannon Demarest has composed over 200 piano works across a career recognized by the National Federation of Music Clubs, which awarded her the Special Individual Merit Award for six consecutive years (1971-1977). Her catalog includes the widely performed Banff Panorama Suite, and she has been honored in multiple editions of Who's Who publications spanning American women, international music, and western regional figures.

Demarest's travels across Asia, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Iceland, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean with her husband have deeply shaped her compositional voice. Beyond her work as a pianist and composer for students of all levels, she is also an accomplished published poet, bringing a lyrical sensibility to her musical writing.

Why we love this

Demarest captures genuine humor without relying on novelty or condescension. The physical comedy of bouncing hands across the keyboard engages young pianists while the C minor harmonic color and contrasting textures offer real expressive substance. It's exactly the kind of character piece that makes students actually want to practice because the musical content matches the fun of performing it.

What to expect

Playful mischief with a sophisticated undertow. The C minor tonality keeps the monkey antics grounded in real harmonic color while the hand bouncing and textural surprises keep the energy bouncy and alive. You'll find yourself grinning while you play.

Who it's for

Early intermediate pianists ready for music that balances technical challenge with genuine character. Students preparing recital programs built around themes (animals, humor, storytelling) will find this piece both musically rewarding and genuinely fun to perform.

How to get the most out of it

  • Plan your hand positions and jumps in advance during practice. Mark larger shifts on the score so you know exactly where you're traveling on the keyboard.
  • Lean into the contrasts the composer has written. Let the shifts between humorous and more lyrical moments come through clearly in your touch and tempo choices.
  • Record yourself playing through at performance tempo to catch uneven rhythms or rushed passages that feel fine in slow practice but show up under real-time pressure.

How to use it

Program this as a recital opener or mid-program palette cleanser when you need to shift mood and energy. It works especially well in an animal-themed recital or a mixed program where you want to showcase your student's ability to bring character and personality to the keyboard.

Skills your students will build

  • Hand independence and keyboard navigation across wider intervals
  • Dynamic contrast and expressive interpretation of character pieces
  • Rhythmic precision in 4/4 meter with contrasting textures
  • Harmonic awareness in C minor contexts
