More about this title

About the Composer: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck directs choral publications at Alfred Music and has composed and arranged more than 450 choral works, vocal resources, and children's musicals. His pedagogical materials, including Sing at First Sight, Foundations in Choral Sight Singing, and Vocalize! 45 Vocal Warm-Ups That Teach Technique, have become standards in music education. YouTube searches reveal his music performed by choirs across the globe, and his guest conducting, choreography, and clinician work have taken him to honor choirs and all-state groups throughout the Southeast and beyond.

Beck holds degrees in Music Education from Ithaca College (Bachelor's) and Northwest Missouri State University (Master's). A tenor himself, he sings with the North Carolina Master Chorale Chamber Choir, directs musical theatre, and has been a studio vocalist for Alfred Music since 1992. His commitment to arts education, music literacy, and choral artistry infuses both his original compositions and the catalog he develops for Alfred.

Why we love this

A novelty piece with genuine choral charm, 'Secret Santa' brings humor and accessibility to holiday programming without sacrificing musicality. The recorded accompaniment lets you rehearse independently and performs with polish at concert time, making it ideal for groups balancing multiple holiday commitments.

What to expect

Upbeat and playful, with the warmth of a novelty song that doesn't wink too hard at the audience. The piece has lightness and swing without sacrificing vocal integrity.

Who it's for

Choirs looking for a secular Christmas piece that entertains audiences without leaning on either heavy arranging or sentimentality. This works for high school, college, and adult community choirs seeking a contemporary holiday selection.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the comedic timing early in rehearsal; the piece's humor lands strongest when singers commit to the groove and lyrical content together.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment as a steady reference during sectionals so singers lock the rhythm independently before conducting with live piano or accompaniment.
  • Balance the novelty appeal with clear diction; audiences will follow the charming narrative only if they hear every word.

How to use it

Place this in the second half of a holiday concert after more serious seasonal fare to shift the mood and give audiences a chance to laugh. It pairs well with both traditional carols and other contemporary secular holiday selections.

Skills your students will build

  • Rhythmic precision in contemporary pop/novelty styles
  • Ensemble balance between melody and harmonic support
  • Crisp diction for lyrical clarity in faster-moving passages
  • Flexibility in tone and style shifting from verse to chorus
