About the Composer: Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht brings three decades of publishing experience and a gift for writing music that energizes young singers. Her prolific catalog includes over 600 choral works and 75 musicals, many of which have become classroom staples. She has received the ASCAP Special Music Award annually since 1987 and has conducted honor choirs at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center.

Albrecht earned her B.A. from Rollins College in Music and Theater, then pursued graduate work at the University of Miami, where she received an M.A. in Drama and an M.M. in Accompanying. Based in North Carolina with her husband, composer Jay Althouse, she continues to shape choral music education through her work and leadership in professional organizations.

Why we love this

This 40-minute variety show format gives every student a chance to shine, whether they're singing a featured number or part of an ensemble piece. The mix of characters (Mistletones, Snowflakes, Reindeer, Elves, and more) naturally accommodates different vocal ranges and performance comfort levels. With staging notes already built into the script and a polished recorded performance to guide rehearsals, you get a cohesive show concept without reinventing the wheel.

What to expect

Tuning into a live television special from a simpler era. The variety format keeps things moving and playful, with unexpected characters delivering songs and comic relief between the main musical numbers. It's festive without being saccharine, energetic without demanding virtuosity.

Who it's for

Third grade and up groups looking for a complete holiday program that requires minimal additional staging or scripting work. Directors seeking a show with built-in variety, humor, and multiple character roles will find the ensemble already designed to fit different class sizes and skill levels.

How to get the most out of it

  • Listen through the full recording as a group before distributing music. Let students hear the energy and style they're aiming for, especially the comedic timing in the commercial segments.
  • Use the variety show structure to your advantage: rotate featured roles among singers so multiple students get solos throughout the evening rather than concentrating spotlight moments in one or two pieces.
  • Encourage performers to study their character parts carefully. Mrs. Claus, the Reindeer, and the Elves each have distinct personalities that should come through in tone and stage presence.
  • Keep the pacing brisk. This is entertainment, not concert formality. Quick transitions between numbers and a light touch with the spoken commercials will maintain audience energy through the full 40 minutes.

How to use it

Schedule this as your main winter concert event, treating it as the anchor program rather than one piece among many. The 40-minute length and self-contained storyline make it ideal for a full holiday showcase, allowing you to skip the usual assembly of disconnected songs. It also works well for community outreach performances or evening holiday programs where audience members want an entertaining experience rather than a traditional concert format.

Skills your students will build

  • Character interpretation and dramatic storytelling through song
  • Ensemble blend and coordination across multiple simultaneous character groups
  • Confidence performing as a named role with repeated musical material
  • Following cued entries and managing transitions in a longer, non-linear form
  • Stylistic flexibility (rock, novelty, and pop musical theater idioms)
