About the Composer: Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht has built a career bridging composition, conducting, and music education. Since 1987, she has been an annual ASCAP Special Music Award recipient, with more than 600 choral publications and 75 musicals and songbooks to her name. She has guest conducted at major venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center, and spent over three decades leading choral and vocal publications for prominent educational music publishers, most recently as Director of School Choral, Vocal, and Elementary Publications at Alfred Music.

Albrecht holds degrees from Rollins College (B.A. in Music and Theater, 1976), the University of Miami (M.A. in Drama, 1977; M.M. in Accompanying, 1979), and has taught at Oakland University, Jersey City State College, and Meredith College. Her work centers on choral movement and accessibility for young singers. In 2021, she received the Distinguished Alumna Award from both the University of Miami Frost School of Music and Rollins College, where she serves on the Board of Trustees.

Why we love this

Albrecht captures the energy of a live TV show without sacrificing musicality or staging clarity. The combination of character groups (The Mistletones, the Reindeer, the Elves) creates natural casting flexibility and keeps ensemble engagement high across mixed-ability singers. The included listening CD lets you hear the full production concept before committing rehearsal time, and the staging notes eliminate the guesswork that usually comes with novelty pieces.

What to expect

A rollicking TV variety special from your own stage. The piece bounces between character moments and ensemble energy, evoking the playfulness of classic holiday television while keeping the focus on singing. The comedic timing and rock-influenced arrangements keep students engaged and the audience entertained.

Who it's for

Upper elementary and middle school choirs looking for a complete performance vehicle that balances singing with theatrical fun. Directors who want a holiday program with built-in variety (songs, characters, dialogue) and singers who thrive on character work and ensemble storytelling will connect with this show.

How to get the most out of it

  • Assign character groups strategically to balance your roster; soloists can alternate within ensemble roles so no single voice carries the weight of a full character part.
  • Use the listening CD to discuss tone and energy with your singers before rehearsing individual numbers; hearing the production concept first builds investment.
  • Plan staging and blocking early by consulting the included notes alongside rehearsal; novelty pieces thrive when singers know their physical space and movement cues.
  • Record a run-through midway through rehearsals so singers can hear themselves in context and adjust blend and balance accordingly.

How to use it

This 40-minute show works as a complete winter concert program or as the centerpiece of a holiday celebration. Its episodic structure (different characters performing throughout) allows it to stand alone without additional pieces, making it ideal for schools with limited rehearsal time or multiple grade levels. Consider pairing it with a brief opening piece or finale if you want to extend program length.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing with character and theatrical expression
  • Ensemble blend across multiple song styles and tempos
  • Reading and performing rock-influenced rhythms and phrasing
  • Coordinating singing with staged movement and blocking
  • Sustaining energy and focus through a multi-section production
  • Adapting vocal tone and style to different ensemble roles (Mistletones, Elves, etc.)
