About the Arranger: Carrie Lane Gruselle

Carrie Lane Gruselle

Carrie Lane Gruselle earned her Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and her Master of Music Education from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where she specialized in the Suzuki method. She has taught elementary and middle level strings in the Appleton Area School District while also serving as cello instructor for the Lawrence University Arts Academy in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Why we love this

Gruselle preserves the essential character and momentum of Mozart's beloved finale while crafting an arrangement that sits comfortably under young players' fingers. The scoring keeps all sections engaged with meaningful material, never relegating younger players to padding voices, so your entire orchestra feels the drive of this masterwork.

What to expect

The rondo sparkles with wit and infectious rhythmic momentum. Delightful yet never trivial, it bounces along with the sophisticated charm that makes Mozart so enduringly appealing, inviting players to discover how much character and musical storytelling can fit into a piece that feels effortless.

Who it's for

This arrangement serves developing string orchestras in grades 5-8 who are ready to tackle genuine masterworks without oversimplification. It works beautifully for ensembles preparing for festival or contest and for programs seeking a crowd-pleasing work that also builds serious musicianship.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the off-the-string bowings with clarity and precision; light articulation is the key to capturing the playful energy Mozart embedded in this rondo without losing elegance.
  • Balance the melodic lines carefully across first and second violins so the main themes sing through the texture while the supporting voices remain buoyant and rhythmically locked.
  • Keep the tempo brisk but controlled; rushing robs the piece of its character, while dragging flattens the propulsive energy that makes this movement so satisfying.

How to use it

Program this as a confident closer on a festival or concert featuring other Classical repertoire, or pair it with a contrasting slower movement earlier in the concert to frame a complete musical arc. Its approachable virtuosity makes it an excellent building block for orchestras working toward larger multi-movement works.

Skills your students will build

  • Light, articulate off-the-string bowings
  • Balancing sustained and rhythmic material across violin sections
  • Maintaining forward momentum in classical form
  • Ensemble precision in fast, contrapuntal textures
  • Playing with transparency and elegance at appropriate tempo
