About the Composer: Margaret Goldston

Margaret Goldston

Margaret Goldston (1932–2003) brought both composition and pedagogy to her North Carolina studio, where she taught students across all age levels. She earned her Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from Louisiana State University and studied composition privately with Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Ward. Her work earned recognition from the North Carolina Federation of Music Clubs, which named her Composer of the Year in both 1983 and 1994; LSU honored her as School of Music Alumnus of the Year in 1991.

Goldston's compositions became fixtures on festival and contest lists, particularly through the National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festivals Bulletin. She conducted masterclasses and clinics throughout the United States and Canada, leaving a lasting mark on music education that extended beyond her lifetime. In 2020, the Music Teachers National Association posthumously honored her as a Foundation Fellow, cementing her legacy as both a composer and educator whose work continues to serve students.
