About the Arranger: Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray directs choirs at Rosemead High School in California, where she has shaped choral music education since 2004. She holds degrees in Piano Performance and Composition from Biola University and a Master of Arts in Music Composition from UC Santa Barbara, along with her California Single Subject Music Credential. Her output as a composer exceeds 100 published choral works.
Beyond the classroom and rehearsal room, Gray continues to perform and compose while maintaining an active life that includes travel, reading, swimming, and cycling with her husband.
Why we love this
Gray understands how to honor a spiritual's soul while giving singers something fresh to sink their teeth into. The syncopated refrains and call and response structure keep the arrangement grounded in tradition, but the descant that builds throughout transforms a familiar tune into something that feels earned and climactic. Directors love this because it programs strong, even in a concert full of standards.
What to expect
The piece pulses with forward momentum, driven by that rhythmic piano foundation. Verses unfold as conversational and soulful, then the energy surges back through the choral riff before building toward a descant that grows increasingly luminous and emotionally present. By the final measures, you feel the accumulation of every phrase.
Who it's for
SAB choirs with intermediate-to-advancing musicianship will thrive with this arrangement. It works equally well for high school ensembles, community choirs, or festival-bound groups looking for a piece that balances accessibility with sophistication and genuine spiritual weight.
How to get the most out of it
- Anchor the rhythmic piano accompaniment so it locks in tightly with the ensemble; the syncopation drives the energy throughout, and any looseness undermines the propulsive quality of the piece.
- Shape the crescendoing choral riff with intentional dynamics so it bridges clearly between the refrains and verses, giving singers a moment to breathe and reset.
- Layer the descant gradually over the final section, bringing it in softly first so the soulfulness builds believably rather than arriving all at once.
- Allow singers room to feel the call and response naturally; resist over-conducting and let the musical conversation breathe between voices.
How to use it
Program this as a powerful closer for a concert celebrating African American spirituals, or place it in a sacred music set where its contemporary arrangement can sit alongside other traditional repertoire. It also works beautifully as a festival or competition selection because the arrangement stands on its own while the piece remains recognizable and moving to any audience.
