About the Arranger: Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray has directed choirs at Rosemead High School in California since 2004, where she also teaches piano. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and Composition from Biola University and a Master of Arts in Music Composition from UC Santa Barbara, credentials that ground her work in both performance and compositional craft.

With over 100 published choral compositions to her name, Gray brings deep experience in writing for voices across multiple styles and levels. Beyond her work as composer and arranger, she earned her California Single Subject Music Credential from Cal State Northridge and remains active as a performer and educator.

Why we love this

Gray's arrangement respects the spiritual's roots while giving singers and pianists genuine musical material to sink their teeth into. The PianoTrax format frees your singers from dependence on a live accompanist during rehearsal and performance, a practical gift that also opens programming possibilities for smaller choirs or contests where piano access might otherwise be limited.

What to expect

Grounded and hopeful, the spiritual's timeless text meets a piano arrangement that honors tradition while sounding fresh and immediate. Singers experience both the weight of cultural legacy and the forward motion of a piece genuinely written for modern voices.

Who it's for

SATB choirs preparing for festivals or contests who need reliable, engaging sacred repertoire with flexible accompaniment options. This works equally well for school choirs seeking a spiritual with substance and community or church choirs wanting a contemporary arrangement of a beloved traditional.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the arrangement against the recorded piano part during rehearsals by varying how much accompaniment volume you use; start with full volume for learning, then gradually reduce it as singers gain security in their parts.
  • Attend to phrasing as a unit: the spiritual's call-and-response character invites singers to listen across parts and breathe together even when individual lines have different rhythmic profiles.
  • Shape dynamics as a choir rather than by section; this arrangement asks for collective control, not isolated voice part work.
  • Allow the spiritual's natural swing and rhythmic flexibility some room rather than metronomic precision; let the recorded accompaniment guide tempo but not constrain the choir's organic breathing.

How to use it

Position this as a showcase piece in a sacred or spirituals-themed concert, or use it as your festival competition selection for a choir ready to tackle four-part harmony with character and conviction. The PianoTrax format also makes it practical for end-of-year performances when accompanist schedules are tight.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing spiritual style with authentic phrasing and rhythmic flexibility
  • SATB blend and balance in a four-part spiritual texture
  • Responding to recorded accompaniment while maintaining ensemble cohesion
  • Sustaining emotional commitment through traditional sacred material
