About the Arranger: Nick Baratta

Nick Baratta

Nick Baratta earned his BM in Music Education and Applied Percussion from The New England Conservatory in 1980, studying with BSO percussionist Frank Epstein and Vic Firth. For two decades he directed bands and taught all percussion students at West Genesee Central Schools in New York, while simultaneously serving as Creative Director and arranger for the West Genesee Marching Band since 1978. Under his arrangement work, West Genesee became a 30-time New York State Champion.

Baratta's compositions and arrangements have been performed at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, MENC national conferences, Bands of America festivals, and the Percussive Arts Society National Convention. He served as an All-State selector for New York for percussion (1990-95), arranged for the Texas Sky Ryders during their DCI World Championship run, and has maintained a private percussion studio since 1980. His work has been recorded and performed by ensembles including Eastman School of Music and the University of Utah. He has been published by Alfred/Belwin since 1987 and continues to consult with competitive marching programs.

Why we love this

Baratta captures what made this summer hit infectious without getting bogged down in studio layering. The arrangement locks into the groove immediately, giving your band something current and fun to sink their teeth into. Grade 3 doesn't mean dumbed down; the parts sit well on each instrument and the arrangement builds energy in smart ways that your section leaders can actually control.

What to expect

Immediate energy and forward momentum. The arrangement channels the song's dance groove and hip-hop swagger into a format that feels natural on a marching field. It's upbeat and celebratory without being simplistic.

Who it's for

Marching bands at Grade 3 level looking for contemporary repertoire that connects with students. This works for fall circuits, football games, or any program seeking an accessible but engaging modern hit that doesn't require advanced technique to sound polished.

How to get the most out of it

  • Keep the hip-hop feel grounded in the percussion section. Lock the snare articulation tight; loose playing will scatter the groove faster than any tempo issue will.
  • Balance the low brass and bass drum so they sit in the pocket together. This isn't a march; it's a contemporary pop arrangement that needs rhythmic precision more than power.
  • Let the front ensemble (if you have one) own the melodic hooks. They'll anchor the syncopated figures that give the piece its character.
  • Resist the urge to push tempo on the high-energy sections. Baratta's chart breathes; honor the rests and dynamic shape rather than just running harder.

How to use it

Slot this into your opener or closer during field shows where you want instant audience recognition and student enthusiasm. It pairs well with classic or rock standards in a mixed program, offering a refreshing modern contrast. The moderate difficulty means you can teach it without sacrificing time from other repertoire.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and executing syncopated rhythmic figures in contemporary styles
  • Maintaining precise articulation in funk and hip-hop grooves
  • Balancing melody and rhythm section so neither overwhelms the other
  • Sustaining musical energy through repetitive sections without losing focus
