About the Composer: Catherine Rollin

Catherine Rollin

Catherine Rollin maintains an active dual career as both a performing pianist and a composer whose students have won significant competitions. She holds degrees from the University of Michigan (Bachelor of Musical Arts with distinction) and Oakland University School of Performing Arts (Master of Music), and has led workshops and masterclasses across North America and Asia.

Rollin's compositions have earned commissions from Clavier Companion, the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), and the Michigan Music Teachers Association, with multiple works selected for the National Federation of Music Clubs Festivals Bulletin. She served as a judge for the MTNA Student Composition Competition and the Lynn Freeman Olson Composition Contest. Her MTNA-commissioned trio for flute, alto saxophone, and piano (Suite Detroit) premiered at the 2018 national conference, and her ASCAP award-winning series Museum Masterpieces has been featured in concert by the Steinway Society.

Why we love this

Rollin writes intermediate rock ballads that balance accessibility with genuine musical substance. This piece delivers the energy and appeal of the rock genre without requiring advanced technical facility, making it an engaging choice for students who want to play contemporary, stylistically grounded music at their current level.

What to expect

A rock ballad that blends melodic warmth with driving energy. The piece captures the emotional directness of the genre while remaining grounded in solid harmonic and rhythmic writing.

Who it's for

Intermediate pianists seeking repertoire that feels contemporary and relevant. Students who enjoy rock and popular music will find this a rewarding piece that meets them stylistically while building their technical and musical skills.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish a steady rhythmic foundation in the left hand before layering the melody; rock ballads depend on groove and pocket, not just note accuracy.
  • Shape the melody through dynamic phrasing rather than mechanical evenness; listen for the natural rise and fall of each phrase.
  • Let the rock instrumentation inform your touch; think of how a full band would balance drums, bass, and guitar when deciding pedal and articulation choices.

How to use it

Program this as a solo in a student recital or community concert to showcase a young pianist's ability to master style and groove. It also works well in a mixed program to demonstrate range, bridging classical training with contemporary musical interests.

Skills your students will build

  • Rock and popular music style and groove
  • Rhythmic precision in a non-classical context
  • Dynamic shaping and phrasing across longer melodic lines
  • Left hand independence and consistent pulse
  • Pedal control for sustain and clarity in a rock idiom
