About the Arranger: Robert DeCormier

Robert DeCormier

Robert DeCormier trained at Juilliard and built a career spanning Broadway, opera, concert music, and folk traditions. He served seventeen years as music director of the New York Choral Society, worked as conductor and arranger for Harry Belafonte, and held the position of music director for Peter, Paul and Mary from 1978 to 2010. His teaching appointments included the Eastman School of Music, where he was an associate professor of conducting and ensembles.

Beyond the concert hall, DeCormier founded Counterpoint, a professional vocal ensemble based in Vermont that toured throughout New England and Canada while offering workshops with high school choirs. His work with spirituals and American folk songs earned recognition including the Vermont Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts (2002) and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the New England Choral Arts Foundation (2006). His recordings appear on multiple labels including Albany Records, Arabesque, and Centaur, and his television credits include collaborations with Jessye Norman and a CBS Emmy award-winning special with Harry Belafonte.

Why we love this

DeCormier's deep knowledge of spiritual traditions and decades of arranging African-American spirituals shine through in this setting. The writing balances accessibility with genuine musical substance, allowing singers to connect authentically with the text rather than drowning in complexity. A director programming spirituals will find an arrangement that honors the tradition while giving all four voice parts something meaningful to sing.

What to expect

A spiritual suffused with quiet dignity and hope. The writing invites singers to inhabit the emotional landscape of the text, creating space for reflection rather than spectacle.

Who it's for

SATB choirs seeking repertoire that connects singers and audiences to the spiritual tradition with integrity. This arrangement serves intermediate-level ensembles capable of managing four independent parts while maintaining clarity of line and text.

How to get the most out of it

  • Approach the rhythmic language with flexibility; the spiritual tradition calls for breath and phrasing that follow the text's natural cadence rather than metronomic precision.
  • Build warmth in the lower voices to support the melody without overwhelming it; the harmonic foundation matters as much as the tune.
  • Let the text drive dynamics and interpretation; spirituals gain their power through conviction, not volume.

How to use it

Program this as part of a spirituals set or weave it into a concert exploring American choral traditions. The piece works equally well as a concert closer or centerpiece, depending on the surrounding repertoire.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing four independent harmonic lines while maintaining textual clarity
  • Singing with historical awareness of the spiritual tradition
  • Managing flexible phrasing that honors both the text and the musical line
  • Building ensemble blend across all voice parts with attention to voice leading
