About the Composer: Erik Morales

Erik Morales

Erik Morales was born in New York City in 1966 and has built a prolific career as a composer across multiple genres. His output exceeds 150 published works spanning wind ensembles, orchestral settings, jazz, and chamber music, with performances and commissions throughout the United States and internationally. He studied composition at Florida International University and earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Louisiana, Lafayette in 1989, launching a composing career that began in earnest when his high school band director commissioned arrangements in 1985.

Trumpet is Morales' primary instrument, and his contributions to the trumpet repertoire have earned significant recognition, including first-place finishes at the National Trumpet Competitions in 2006 and 2008. His Concerto for Trumpet in C and Piano premiered at the 2009 International Trumpet Guild conference, followed by a consortium-commissioned Concerto for Two Trumpets that debuted at the 2013 ITG conference in Michigan. In 2016, he was inducted into the Louisiana Association for Jazz Education's Hall of Fame. Throughout his career, Morales has maintained a keen focus on balancing artistic integrity with educational value in his compositions.

Why we love this

The multi-meter foundation keeps this piece accessible for developing bands while the dramatic arc and cinematic orchestration make it genuinely engaging to conduct and perform. The prominent percussion writing gives your battery meaningful material to execute, and the relentless forward momentum means students stay locked in through the entire work without the pacing ever dragging.

What to expect

Epic and cinematic, this work unfolds like a film score meant for the concert stage. The music alternates between vast, celestial soundscapes and surging moments of orchestral power, with percussion driving relentless energy throughout.

Who it's for

This score serves bands at the Grade 2.5 to 3 level seeking repertoire with genuine dramatic impact. Directors programming a contest or festival season will find a piece that challenges students musically without requiring virtuosic technique.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the ostinato as your rhythmic anchor from the first rehearsal. Tap it consistently on the podium during early sectional work so wind players internalize the pulse independent of the percussion line.
  • Layer the countermelodies gradually. Start with the primary melodic voice, then add supporting lines once that voice is secure, so the intricate harmonic writing doesn't overwhelm the ensemble.
  • Balance the percussion battery carefully in performance. The work relies on that relentless energy, but cymbals and timpani should enhance rather than overshadow the winds, especially during the celestial passages.
  • Mark your score with the meter changes and transition points clearly so your conducting gesture remains confident when moving between 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4 sections.

How to use it

This is an excellent centerpiece for a concert devoted to contemporary wind band music or a standalone festival entry where you want to showcase both your ensemble's musicality and rhythmic precision. The combination of accessible technical demands and substantial artistic payoff makes it ideal for mid-season programming, when your band has developed enough ensemble cohesion to handle the multi-meter complexity and dynamic control the piece requires.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and executing mixed meters (2/4, 3/4, 4/4)
  • Balancing multiple countermelodic lines
  • Maintaining rhythmic integrity over a persistent ostinato
  • Dynamic contrast and shaping within a fast-moving score
  • Ensemble precision during meter transitions
