More about this title

About the Composer: Jerry Estes

Jerry Estes

Jerry Estes brings classroom experience directly to his compositions. A vocal music teacher at Wydown Middle School in grades 6-8, he earned his B.M.E. with vocal emphasis from Southwest Baptist University and completed his M.M. at Southern Illinois University.

Esses is active in MENC and ASCAP, connecting his work as both educator and composer to the broader music education and publishing communities.

Why we love this

A composer who teaches middle school vocal music understands exactly what your singers can pull off and what will resonate with them. This piece hits the mark for a graduation context where you need something emotionally genuine without overshooting your ensemble's range or stamina. The SoundTrax accompaniment recording gives you a polished musical partner whether your rehearsal time is generous or squeezed.

What to expect

The piece carries the reflective, forward-looking quality that makes graduations memorable. There's warmth in the voicing and a sense of closure paired with anticipation, fitting the bittersweet nature of the occasion.

Who it's for

Choirs preparing a graduation concert or ceremony need repertoire that speaks to the moment without demanding advanced technical skill. This octavo works well for middle school through early high school ensembles, and the included SoundTrax recording makes it accessible whether you have piano accompaniment available or not.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the emotional weight of the text with clear, supported singing. Overloading the interpretation can mask the melody and make the piece feel heavy rather than reflective.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment in rehearsal to help sections lock into the harmonic structure, especially if you're working with younger singers new to four-part voicing.
  • Let the natural phrasing of the graduation text guide your approach to rubato and dynamics rather than imposing artificial expression marks.

How to use it

This works beautifully as an anchor piece in a graduation concert, either as the opening number to set an emotional tone or as part of a multi-piece finale sequence. It also serves well as a standalone performance at a graduation ceremony itself where time is limited and impact matters.

Skills your students will build

  • Four-part harmonic singing and blend
  • Sustained phrase singing with proper breath control
  • Text expression and emotional communication
  • Following a recorded accompaniment track
