More about this title

About the Composer: Martha Mier

Martha Mier

Martha Mier has shaped music education through four decades of prolific composition, working with Alfred Music Publishing since 1989 to create piano literature across all ability levels. Her work reflects the dual perspective of a studio teacher and accomplished clinician; she maintained a private piano studio in Lake City, Florida for many years while building a national reputation as a workshop presenter and adjudicator at major conferences including the Music Teachers National Association Conference and World Piano Pedagogy Conference.

Mier's credentials span professional recognition and active leadership in music education. She holds state and national certification through the Music Teachers National Association, Florida State Music Teachers Association, and National Guild of Piano Teachers, and serves as a member of each organization. Her compositions, including the Jazz, Rags & Blues series and Romantic Impressions series, have appeared frequently on National Federation of Music Clubs festival lists. Beyond solo writing, she co-authored Alfred's Premier Piano Course and has published more than 200 educational works.

Why we love this

Mier's early elementary pieces balance genuine musicality with genuine playability. Rainbow Colors uses a limited range and straightforward rhythms without sacrificing the kind of musical interest that keeps young pianists engaged and wanting to play more.

What to expect

Colorful and accessible, with a playful character that appeals to young pianists discovering how music can evoke imagery. The writing feels fresh and encouraging, never patronizing.

Who it's for

Early elementary piano students encountering pieces that ask them to think beyond mechanics. This solo works for the student who has spent weeks on scales and technique exercises and is ready to play something with a little personality.

How to get the most out of it

  • Listen for the color palette in the title. Even at an early level, early elementary pianists can learn to shape phrases and use dynamic contrast to bring out different 'colors' within the piece.
  • Keep the tempo steady and conversational. Resist the urge to rush; a deliberate pace lets the simple melodies speak clearly and gives the student confidence.
  • Pay attention to hand position and posture from the start. Mier's uncomplicated texture makes this a perfect opportunity to establish good habits before pieces become technically demanding.

How to use it

Include this in a studio recital or informal student showcase where short, character pieces help young students experience performance without the pressure of longer or technically complex works. It pairs naturally with other early elementary solos in a mixed-level recital.
