Why we love this

Sebesky understood what Grade 1 bands actually need: a piece that's genuinely fun to play while teaching real rhythmic fundamentals. The ragtime idiom gives your ensemble natural energy and permission to move, yet the writing remains crystal clear so every section can lock in quickly without endless rehearsal cycles.

What to expect

This piece bounces with the infectious syncopations of early ragtime while maintaining the straightforward clarity you need at this level. Your band will feel the joy of playing something with genuine style, and audiences will hear a concert band having honest fun.

Who it's for

Grade 1 concert bands seeking repertoire that's accessible but not generic. This is ideal for beginning ensembles that need confidence-building material with character and for directors who want to program something lighter than a traditional march without sacrificing musical substance.

How to get the most out of it

  • Encourage the foot stomps to be rhythmically unified across the entire band; this percussive element grounds the ragtime feel and boosts ensemble cohesion.
  • Keep the tempo steady and dance-like rather than marching. Ragtime thrives on a sense of lift and playfulness rather than military precision.
  • Highlight the ragtime syncopations in the melody; they're the personality of the piece, so make sure they're crisp and intentional rather than rushed.

How to use it

Position this as your lighter concert selection when you'd normally program a march, or use it as an opener to set an approachable, energetic tone for your concert. It works equally well in a school assembly or full concert setting and pairs naturally with patriotic selections.

Skills your students will build

  • Ragtime syncopation and rhythmic accuracy
  • Ensemble foot coordination and rhythmic precision
  • Steady tempo maintenance in a dance-like context
  • Foundational ensemble balance and blend
