About the Arranger: Carol Tornquist

Carol Tornquist

Carol Tornquist began playing piano by ear at age four in northwestern Pennsylvania and continued formal studies at the Warren Conservatory of Music. She earned her B.S. in Music Education from SUNY Fredonia, then taught vocal music in upstate New York while instructing at the international Yamaha Music School. A visit to her songwriter brother John W. Thompson in Nashville led to transcription work that evolved into a prolific arranging career spanning over four hundred solo piano collections.

Tornquist's arrangements are known for their technical accessibility and musical integrity, serving pianists in traditional, blended, and contemporary worship settings. She has been an Alfred author since 2010, consistently creating resources that respect both the original melodies and the capabilities of pianists at every level. Her harmonic and rhythmic choices breathe new life into familiar songs while remaining true to their essential character.

Why we love this

These arrangements capture the essence of beloved contemporary Christian songs without overwhelming pianists with unnecessary technical demands. The inclusion of suggested fingerings, pedal markings, and lyrics makes this book equally valuable for church accompanists needing reliable performance material and for students developing their interpretive skills. Tornquist's harmonic choices add sophistication and warmth while maintaining the accessibility that defines the entire collection.

What to expect

Playing through this collection feels like sitting at a piano in a quiet moment of reflection. Each arrangement honors the emotional core of the original song while offering pianists the satisfaction of creating rich, full-voiced textures that feel complete and expressive without technical pyrotechnics.

Who it's for

Church pianists looking for reliable, well-crafted arrangements of modern worship favorites will find immediate value in this collection. Intermediate piano students benefit from the included fingerings and clear notation, while teachers can use these pieces to develop interpretive skills and pedal technique in a musically engaging context.

How to get the most out of it

  • Pay close attention to the pedal markings throughout; they shape the harmonic color and sustain that distinguishes these arrangements from simplified versions
  • Let the lyrics inform your phrasing and dynamic choices, treating the melody line with the same care a vocalist would apply
  • Use the suggested fingerings as written to maintain fluidity, especially in passages that might feel awkward with alternative hand positions
  • Balance the harmonic accompaniment beneath the melody so that listeners hear a unified song, not a foreground and background

How to use it

These pieces work beautifully as prelude and offertory material in worship services, or as recital selections for church piano students. The variety of moods across the 20 songs means you can build a recital program that flows naturally from quiet, introspective moments to declarations of faith, providing the musical scaffolding that transforms a collection of songs into a cohesive experience.

Skills your students will build

  • Executing pedal changes accurately to sustain harmonic resonance
  • Reading and interpreting melodic phrasing informed by text and lyrical content
  • Balancing accompaniment textures to support rather than obscure the melody
  • Sight-reading varied harmonic approaches to familiar melodies
  • Applying suggested fingerings to achieve smooth voice leading
