About the Composer: Alan Baylock

Alan Baylock's compositional voice emerged from decades spent at the intersection of professional jazz performance and education. As director of the Grammy-nominated One O'Clock Lab Band at the University of North Texas and former Chief Arranger for the United States Air Force Band's Airmen of Note, he has shaped the sound of ensembles at every level while writing for world-class soloists including Melissa Aldana, Joshua Redman, Sean Jones, and Arturo Sandoval.

Beyond his work as a performer and bandleader with his own jazz orchestra, Baylock has established himself as a committed advocate within the jazz education community. He has guest-conducted over 100 ensembles across professional, collegiate, and high school settings and served on the faculty of the National Jazz Workshop. In 2022, he co-founded Brava Jazz Publishing with composer and arranger Annie Booth to advance opportunities for women composers in big band jazz—a reflection of his long-standing commitment to equity and access within the art form.
