More about this title

About the Composer: Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht has spent over three decades shaping elementary and choral music education as a composer, conductor, and clinician. Her catalog includes more than 600 choral publications and 75 musicals and songbooks, many of which have become staples in school music programs. She has been honored with the ASCAP Special Music Award annually since 1987 and has conducted festival ensembles at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center.

Albrecht's background in both music and theater (B.A. from Rollins College, M.A. in Drama and M.M. in Accompanying from the University of Miami) informs her distinctive approach to choral composition and movement. As former Director of School Choral, Vocal, and Elementary Publications for Alfred Music, she developed deep expertise in writing for young voices. She has served on music faculties at Oakland University, Jersey City State College, and Meredith College, and received the Distinguished Alumna Award from both Rollins College and the University of Miami Frost School of Music in 2021.

Why we love this

Albrecht brings her signature blend of theatrical storytelling and singable melody to holiday programming. Elementary directors consistently choose her musicals because the material engages young performers while remaining accessible to teach and manage. The parade concept offers natural staging opportunities and the kind of seasonal joy that resonates with audiences and builds confidence in beginning singers.

What to expect

Bright, spirited, and full of holiday cheer, this piece captures the excitement and spectacle of a Christmas parade through the eyes of young performers. The music stays energetic without becoming frantic, allowing singers to enjoy the narrative while maintaining clear, confident delivery. Audiences leave smiling, and young singers feel genuinely proud of what they have accomplished.

Who it's for

This digital musical is designed for elementary music programs at the K through 4 level and works equally well for young singers in private studio group settings or community music classes. Directors seeking a seasonal program that delivers both fun and musical substance will find this a reliable choice. The accessible range and straightforward vocal demands make it suitable for mixed-ability casts.

How to get the most out of it

  • Leverage the recorded accompaniment to establish tempo and keep younger singers secure during early rehearsals; this allows you to focus on diction and movement without doubling as accompanist.
  • Incorporate the choral movement Albrecht is known for: simple processional formations or coordinated gestures during the parade sections add visual interest without requiring extensive choreography training.
  • Balance ensemble unison passages with any solo or small-group moments to showcase individual singers while maintaining the celebratory group energy the piece demands.

How to use it

Schedule this as your December concert centerpiece or an assembly program in the week before winter break. It pairs well with shorter caroling selections or instrumental interludes and requires minimal set design if you choose simple, processional staging. The digital format allows flexibility for schools with varying rehearsal schedules and gives you immediate access to accompaniment support.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing sustained melody lines with clear diction in a theatrical context
  • Responding to rhythmic and textual cues in ensemble settings
  • Coordinating vocal performance with movement and processional staging
  • Following ensemble dynamics and expression through recorded accompaniment
  • Building confidence and stage presence through holiday-themed performance
