More about this title

About the Composer: Dennis Alexander

Dennis Alexander

Dennis Alexander has shaped piano pedagogy for decades through his work with Alfred Music Publishing, beginning in 1986. Since then, he has created more than 400 publications and recordings that have established him as one of the most widely performed composers of educational piano repertoire globally. He served on piano faculties at the University of Montana (where he chaired the department and taught for 24 years), Cal State Fullerton, and Cal State Northridge before moving to Albuquerque, where he continues an active composing schedule.

Beyond the classroom, Alexander maintains a career as a performing artist, having made his New York debut at Carnegie Recital Hall and collaborated with internationally recognized soloists and chamber ensembles. He is a frequent clinician at state and national music teachers conventions, has judged international piano competitions, and has toured extensively throughout Asia and beyond. His commissions from state music teachers associations and other organizations reflect the deep respect he commands within the music education community.

Why we love this

This accelerated book maintains the pedagogical clarity of the Premier Piano Course while demanding faster progress from capable students. The integration of lesson, theory, technique, and performance within each unit eliminates page-turning between materials, keeping students focused and engaged. The online media—particularly the tempo-adjustable software and orchestrated accompaniments—transforms what could be rote practice into expressive, musical work.

What to expect

Book 2 deepens the musicality introduced in Book 1 while increasing technical and rhythmic demands at a brisk pace. The pieces remain accessible and rewarding to play, balancing early romantic and contemporary styles with folk and original works that appeal to developing musicians.

Who it's for

This book serves students who have completed Premier Piano Express Book 1 (or equivalent early Level 2 material) and are ready to advance more quickly than a traditional pace allows. It works equally well for natural young pianists and for older students beginning study who can absorb concepts rapidly. Teachers who value integrated lesson and theory materials will find this format efficient for studio or classroom settings.

How to get the most out of it

  • Use the audio performances to hear how each piece should sound before tackling it yourself; then slow the tempo using the software to isolate tricky passages.
  • Work through the theory and technique pages before attempting a new piece so you understand the underlying musical concepts rather than just the mechanics.
  • Play the orchestrated accompaniments at performance tempo once you're secure with your part; this shifts your focus from note-reading to listening and ensemble awareness.

How to use it

Assign this as the primary text for accelerated private piano students who thrive on structured, efficient progression. In group or classroom piano settings, the worksheets and integrated theory pages provide scaffolding for multiple learning paces within the same lesson. The performance pieces also offer early-level repertoire suitable for student recitals or ensemble demonstrations.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading across multiple staves and managing both-hand coordination
  • Understanding and applying music theory concepts (intervals, chord construction, scale patterns) to repertoire
  • Developing consistent technique through focused exercises paired with performance applications
  • Playing with dynamic control and phrasing at a faster developmental tempo
  • Performing with accompaniment and responding to tempo and musical cues
