More about this title

About the Composer: Dennis Alexander

Dennis Alexander

Dennis Alexander has shaped generations of young pianists through his prolific output of educational compositions. Starting in 1986 with Alfred Music Publishing, he has created more than 400 publications and recordings that define the landscape of pedagogical piano literature. His teaching career spanned three decades across multiple universities, where he developed deep expertise in piano pedagogy and mentored countless students.

Beyond the studio, Alexander remains an active performer and clinician. He has appeared as soloist and collaborative artist with internationally recognized musicians, made his Carnegie Recital Hall debut, and conducted master classes at the national MTNA convention. His compositions have been commissioned by state and regional music associations, and his teaching reach extends globally; he has judged competitions and conducted workshops throughout Asia and across North America. Currently based in Albuquerque, Alexander maintains an active composing schedule while continuing to tour and present at music educators' conventions.

Why we love this

This repertoire book arrives in the language your Spanish-speaking students need, removing a barrier to independent practice and repertoire exploration. Alexander and his co-composers have selected pieces that genuinely hold students' attention, moving beyond sterile exercises into music they actually want to play. The stylistic variety means you can pull material for recitals, studio recordings, or supplementary reinforcement depending on what your curriculum demands in any given week.

What to expect

A collection that keeps students engaged by offering real musical variety. These aren't exercises masquerading as songs; they're pieces with personality and style, whether the student is exploring a folk arrangement, a classical miniature, or something contemporary in character.

Who it's for

Spanish-speaking piano students working through level 2A and 2B material who benefit from seeing method concepts reflected across diverse musical styles. Teachers seeking supplementary repertoire in Spanish that maintains pedagogical consistency with the Premier Piano Express curriculum.

How to get the most out of it

  • Encourage students to listen to the recorded accompaniments on repeat during practice sessions, allowing them to absorb phrasing and tempo before attempting to play along.
  • Treat the single duet as a performance opportunity rather than just another practice piece; pairing students strategically can motivate both players and create an audience moment even in private lessons.
  • Connect each piece to the specific concepts from Premier Piano Express Book 2 that it reinforces, so students understand why a particular arrangement matters to their development.

How to use it

Layer this into your studio's repertoire rotation by assigning one piece per lesson cycle as a supplementary learning tool rather than primary material. The duet works beautifully as a community building moment or studio recital filler, while individual pieces can serve as quick wins when students need a confidence boost or fresh ears on a familiar concept.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and interpreting musical styles beyond classical forms
  • Reinforcement of rhythmic and melodic concepts from Premier Piano Express Book 2
  • Ensemble playing through the included duet
  • Sight-reading fluency with varied textures and accompaniment patterns
  • Musical expression and stylistic interpretation across multiple genres
