Description
Now your students will have the technical tools needed to achieve artistic performances. They will encounter skills in four areas---playing naturally (physical aspects), moving freely (around the keyboard), playing beautifully (tone production) and playing artistically. The technical goals are accomplished through three types of activities---patterned exercises with necessary repetitions to make the technique feel natural, artistic etudes that showcase the student's technique in an artistic musical setting and appealing and descriptive exercises called Technique Tools. The nine Technique Tools in Level 1A relate to relaxed shoulders, arm weight, moving freely, strong fingertips, finger weights, repeated notes, thumb position, finger independence and gentle hand rock. Each page in the Technique Book correlates with a specific page in the Lesson Book; when the Lesson, Theory, Performance and Technique books are used together, they offer a fully integrated and unparalleled comprehensive approach to piano instruction. 32 pages.

More about this title

About the Author: Dennis Alexander

Dennis Alexander

Dennis Alexander has shaped piano pedagogy for decades through his work as a composer, teacher, and clinician. Beginning his partnership with Alfred Music Publishing in 1986, he went on to create over 400 publications and recordings that established him as one of the most influential voices in educational piano literature. His career included 24 years teaching piano pedagogy at the University of Montana, faculty positions at Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Northridge, and ongoing work as a collaborative artist, recitalist, and master class conductor at national music teachers conventions.

Beyond the classroom, Alexander has maintained an active performance career, including a Carnegie Recital Hall debut and extensive touring throughout Asia and North America. His compositions have been commissioned by state associations and music organizations, and his contributions to music education have earned him recognition as a clinician and adjudicator internationally. He continues to compose and teach from Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Why we love this

This technique book succeeds because it refuses to isolate mechanics from music. Students work through patterned exercises and Technique Tools (nine focused concepts like arm weight, finger independence, and relaxed shoulders) within the context of actual artistic etudes, so technique always serves expressive playing. The integrated design means every page connects directly to the corresponding Lesson Book page, creating seamless reinforcement that feels purposeful rather than drilled.

What to expect

Focused and intentional. Each page targets a specific physical or musical goal, so students know exactly what they're working toward. The combination of patterned repetition and artistic etudes creates a satisfying balance between building muscle memory and making real music.

Who it's for

Beginning piano students (Level 1A) who are ready to move beyond rote finger motions and start thinking about how their body, hand, and fingers work together. This book is essential for studio teachers and class piano instructors who want their students to build solid technical habits from the start while maintaining musical engagement.

How to get the most out of it

  • Address one Technique Tool at a time rather than expecting students to apply all nine simultaneously. Isolate the focus (say, strong fingertips or gentle hand rock) so the student can feel the difference in their own body.
  • Have the student play the same exercise without and then with the targeted technique so they can hear and feel the immediate improvement in tone or control.
  • Use the artistic etudes as mini-recital pieces. When students perform these studies, they experience firsthand how technique enables the musicality they've been developing in the Lesson Book.
  • Return to earlier Technique Tools throughout the year. These nine concepts stack and reinforce each other, so revisiting them in new pieces deepens understanding.

How to use it

Work through the Technique Book in tandem with the Premier Piano Course Lesson Book, using each technique page as preparation or reinforcement for the corresponding lesson. The Technique Tools accumulate throughout the level, so by the end of 1A, students have internalized nine foundational concepts that carry forward into more advanced repertoire.
