Premier Piano Course, Masterworks 4: Piano Book & Online Audio

A tour through centuries of piano writing, from the architecture of the Classical masters to the color and freedom of Romantic expression. Each style period has its own voice, and playing these pieces back-to-back reveals how composers imagined the piano differently depending on when they were writing.

Level 4 pianists ready to explore repertoire from multiple compositional traditions without the training wheels of adaptation. These students want to perform real pieces and understand music history through direct experience at the keyboard.

• Study the editorial fingerings and pedal markings carefully; they're designed to guide authentic interpretation while you're still building independence with these decisions.
• Use the online audio to hear how the pieces should sound, then work backward to identify the musical gestures that create that effect.
• Pay close attention to dynamics and phrasing markings, especially in pieces where they've been added editorially; these shape the character of each style period.

Build a recital program around one piece from each style period, letting students present the breadth of their musical knowledge in a single performance. Alternatively, use individual selections as supplementary material to deepen understanding of concepts from the corresponding Lesson Book 4 unit.
